The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This role requires a strong data entry background and the ability to perform multiple laboratory support tasks with accuracy and efficiency.

Duties may include:

  • A-station processing
  • Presort activities
  • Specimen pickup and delivery
  • Imaging/microfilming
  • Centrifugation
  • Aliquoting

The position is detail-oriented and fast-paced, requiring strong organizational skills and the ability to learn and recognize various specimen types related to client-ordered tests. The SPT I must also learn and comply with changing regulatory requirements, sometimes updated daily, making adaptability and flexibility critical to success. This is a production environment with strict productivity, quality standards, and departmental completion times.

The role involves working in a biohazard environment, practicing proper safety procedures, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace. The technician must communicate effectively with all levels of staff and demonstrate professionalism aligned with company core values. Most work is performed on the night/second shift, with required availability for weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, and overtime based on staffing needs.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work safely in a biohazard laboratory environment

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience
  • Medical background with knowledge of medical terminology
  • Prior hospital laboratory experience
  • Experience in a production or high-volume work environment
