As Controls Engineering Manager, you will be accountable for defining, governing and assuring Global Switch’s controls engineering approach across the data centre estate. You will provide technical authority over the design, integration and commissioning of control systems, ensuring consistency, resilience and compliance with Tier 3+ requirements, regulatory standards and internal engineering governance. Operating as a core member of the Delivery team, you will work closely with consultants, contractors, Delivery Engineers and Operations to ensure controls solutions are robust, scalable and fit for long-term operational performance across all campuses.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the basis of controls design for Global Switch, ensuring standardisation across all data centre facilities.
- Analyse and approve controls-related design documentation, including specifications, sequences of operation, points lists, bills of materials (BoMs), test scripts, panel drawings and operation manuals.
- Track, evaluate and provide guidance on new technologies, industry trends and sustainable engineered solutions relevant to data centre controls.
- Prepare and maintain controls fit-out guides for new and existing data centres.
- Support commissioning activities, including bench tests, FATs and FWTs, working with suppliers and system integrators to ensure correct configuration and performance.
- Review and evaluate controls designs and monitor technical works for compliance with codes, standards and accepted engineering practices.
- Identify key controls design and technical risks, ensuring they are captured, managed and mitigated within the project risk register.
- Implement contingency plans and support recovery actions where project slippage or technical issues arise.

You thrive working across the full project lifecycle, partnering closely with consultants, contractors, delivery engineers, and operations teams to ensure controls systems are robust, scalable, and fit for long‑term operational performance.
Analytical and solutions‑focused, you’re confident reviewing complex design documentation, identifying and mitigating technical risk, and supporting commissioning and incident resolution when issues arise. You balance engineering excellence with commercial awareness, ensuring optimal outcomes without compromising reliability or compliance. As a leader, you communicate clearly, influence effectively across multidisciplinary teams, and are committed to continuous improvement capturing lessons learned, adopting innovation, and raising technical standards across the data centre estate.
Key Requirements
- Strong expertise in data centre controls systems, including PLCs (controllers), HMIs (operator interfaces), BMS platforms, control networks and associated field devices.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex control system faults under operational and incident conditions.
