The Human Rights + Women Support Project in Guatemala offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of vulnerable and marginalized communities. By working with local grassroots organizations, you'll contribute to efforts fostering equality and justice in the country. The project includes 25 Spanish lessons prior to departure to help you prepare for your time in Guatemala.
Guatemala's history has been marked by human rights violations and social exclusion, especially affecting the Maya indigenous population. Many communities still face challenges in accessing justice and basic services. Local NGOs and charities play a crucial role in advocating for change and protecting rights.
As a volunteer, you'll participate in documenting abuses, educating the international community, or supporting victims, making a tangible difference. The project also supports women's rights initiatives to combat gender-based violence, a pervasive issue in Guatemala.
Upon arrival in Quetzaltenango, you'll be welcomed and introduced to your host organization. Placements run from Monday to Friday, with flexibility for full or part-time work, and occasional weekend opportunities. The program includes cultural immersion, Spanish lessons, and opportunities to engage deeply with local communities.
Transportation from Guatemala City airport is provided. Accommodation options include staying with a local host family or at a hotel. The cost is $1000 per week, with a minimum of two weeks, covering accommodation, meals, airport transfer, activities, and 24/7 support.
