About Global Citizen

Global Citizen’s PR & Communications department is seeking a dynamic PR professional with a passion for innovative storytelling, sharp news sense, and a strong contact list of industry-leading journalists across Europe, the Middle East and Africa to help further Global Citizen’s mission to end extreme poverty and drive positive impact globally.

Reporting to the VP of PR & Communications, the objective of the Director, Public Relations & Communications, EMEA, is to protect and promote Global Citizen’s brand in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This is done through proactive and thoughtful sourcing and pitching of news from and for the organization, and building and maintaining a network of journalists and social influencers to which these stories can be shared with. The job requires tight management skills and the ability to nurture a team of outside press officers and agencies on a consistent basis.

This is a full time, short-term role responsible for leading Global Citizen’s PR activities in key markets, including but not limited to:

  • Europe: UK, France, Germany, Spain
  • Africa: South Africa, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya
  • MENA: UAE

This role will also oversee the PR agencies working on Move Afrika, and is responsible for the development and execution of the Move Afrika PR plan. This role will also drive Global Citizen’s G7 and G20 media strategy and tactics.

The ideal candidate will have experience collaborating internationally with colleagues, partners and agencies to execute large-scale public relations campaigns. They will be a self-starter, with the flexibility to adapt quickly, sharp attention to detail, a positive, solution-oriented mindset, tight organization skills, and the confidence to work with counterparts and stakeholders across all professional levels.

This role will lead on outreach and maintaining relationships with journalists in the above key markets with tier-1 outlets and platforms, formulating innovative and timely pitches that elevate Global Citizen’s campaigns, events and executive spokespeople to new and existing audiences across sectors. The Director, Public Relations & Communications EMEA will develop and execute PR strategies for priority initiatives in close coordination with the New York office, including the Artist Relations, Marketing, Brand Partnerships and Global Policy & Advocacy departments, with support from external PR agencies in Africa and Abu Dhabi.

The ideal candidate will have a robust contact list of key reporters in verticals including music & entertainment, policy, philanthropy and/or business; outstanding writing and communication skills; confidence working across timezones, languages and cultures; experience working on large-scale live events; and knowledge of tools and platforms such as Muck Rack, Meltwater, and PR Newswire.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Media Relations (60%)
    • Foster and maintain strong relationships with key reporters at top tier media outlets, including entertainment, hard news and political outlets, both domestically and internationally.
    • Ideate, pitch and secure innovative stories to reach key and new audiences, with a focus on Global Citizen’s strategic objectives, vision and impact.
    • Identify and pursue interview and thought leadership opportunities for Global Citizen’s senior executives and spokespeople at key events, conferences and summits, and on podcasts.
  • PR Campaigns & Events (30%)
    • Lead the execution of PR campaigns related to Global Citizen’s campaigns, events, brand partnerships and special projects across EMEA.
    • Draft, proof and edit materials, including press releases, interview briefs, press statements, bios, backgrounders, etc.
    • Logistical coordination leading up to and during live events, press conferences, junkets, briefings, etc.
    • Oversee the day-to-day management of public relations agencies in EMEA driving strong alignment and positive results.
  • Team Administration (10%)
    • Liaise with all departments leading up to and during live events and tentpole campaigns in EMEA.
    • Schedule meetings and calls with internal and external groups across time zones, including scheduling media interviews and briefings for executives.
    • Maintain and organize the PR team drive and archives for designated markets, events and projects.

Required Competencies:

Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor’s or Master's degree or equivalent, ideally in Public Relations, Corporate Communications, Journalism or Marketing
  • 5-8 years experience running global campaigns in entertainment, media or politics

  • Strong media relationships across top tier hard news, entertainment and/or political media outlets, in key markets described above
  • Strong understanding of the global news landscape and the evolving digital media landscape, with a particular focus on social-first new media
  • Excellent communication skills, with demonstrated ability to write varied high level materials and present complex topics clearly and succinctly
  • Capacity to understand and analyze complex information and turn it into accessible messaging and make thoughtful recommendations
  • Experience executing press events and/or activations; confidence liaising with members of the press and high profile individuals
  • Strong news sense and analytical skills, ability to anticipate and mitigate potential problems
  • A nimble approach to complex tasks, with the flexibility to adapt quickly; diligent, organized, with excellent attention to detail in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities
  • Team player with a hunger to achieve excellent results; resourceful and proactive with a positive attitude and inclusive style that energizes and mobilizes the team
  • Confidentiality, discretion and trustworthiness a must
  • Additional language skills desired
