The role of the Maintenance Assistant is very important. It involves keeping the facilities in good operating condition, which aids the smooth running of the care home and helps to maintain the safety of the residents.
General Maintenance
- Carry out routine maintenance tasks including painting, decorating, and general repairs.
- Perform minor plumbing repairs (unblocking drains, fixing leaks, replacing washers).
- Undertake basic electrical tasks (changing light bulbs, replacing plugs, resetting trip switches).
- Maintain internal and external fixtures and fittings.
- Carry out minor carpentry work as required.
- Ensure all equipment and facilities are in good working order.
- Conduct regular safety checks throughout the building and grounds.
- Test fire alarms, emergency lighting, and other safety equipment.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and records.
- Keep inventory of tools, equipment, and materials.
- Order supplies and equipment as needed within budget constraints.
- Participate in audits and inspections (CQC, Environmental Health, Fire Service).
Grounds & External Areas
- Maintain gardens, pathways, and external areas to ensure they are safe and presentable.
- Keep car parks, entrances, and external routes clear and accessible.
- Undertake seasonal tasks such as gritting in winter and maintaining outdoor furniture.
- Ensure external lighting is functioning correctly.
Reactive Maintenance
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff and management.
- Prioritise urgent repairs that affect resident safety or comfort.
- Liaise with external contractors when specialist work is required.
- Oversee contractor work to ensure quality and minimal disruption to residents.
Essential Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience in a maintenance or handyperson role.
- Basic understanding of plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work.
- Experience working in a care home, hospital, or similar environment (desirable).
- Valid UK driving licence (desirable).
