Overview

Senior Library Assistant role at HMP Wandsworth, 35 hours per week.

Working in two on-site prisoner libraries, providing access to a wide variety of collections and resources including books, computers and reference materials.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of the team to ensure the smooth operation of the libraries.
  • Welcome and engage with prisoners, providing guidance on making the most of library visits and understanding the reason behind their visit.
  • Devise and create imaginative events; assist with information and reference services.
  • Follow safeguarding, child and vulnerable adult policies and procedures.
  • Follow normal and emergency operating procedures and adhere to relevant policies and manuals.
  • Interact with prisoners through conversations and support their needs; provide information service to users; order books and arrange engaging events and activities.
  • Support prisoners with all queries; participate in training.
  • Maintain security and safety, including ensuring doors are locked and managing access where required; assist with some lifting as necessary.
  • Assess suitability of books requested by prisoners; work with Education and Resettlement departments.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Evidence of making a difference to customers.
  • Confident IT skills; numeracy and literacy; strong communications.
  • Administration skills; customer service focus; organised and efficient; ability to work well in a team.
  • Passion and personality; can-do attitude; common sense; ability to handle challenging environments.
  • Experience in a library or customer-facing role is desirable.
