Oncology Medical Head UK in London

Job Purpose
Medical Affairs is critical in ensuring that our medicines reach the appropriate patients. The UK Oncology Medical Head provides overall leadership for Oncology Medical Affairs activities in the UK. This role leads the Oncology Medical team, including Medical Asset Leads and the Field Medical Director, to develop and execute global, regional and country-specific Medical Affairs plans, while ensuring robust medical governance and full compliance for oncology-related activities in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

• Leadership of the Oncology Medical Team
  Develop, lead and effectively deploy the UK Oncology Medical team (Medical Asset Leads, Medical & Scientific Advisors, MSLs and supporting roles). Lead the Field Medical Director to ensure MSL focus on priority activities, aligned with global and local strategy. Set clear objectives, assess performance and provide ongoing coaching, feedback and development for direct and indirect reports.
• Strategy and Planning
  Provide strategic input into global and regional Oncology Medical strategies, informed by customer insights and UK customer voice. Translate global and regional medical plans into robust, country-level medical tactics and ensure high-quality execution in the UK. Ensure close partnership with Global and Regional Medical Affairs to shape and deliver Oncology strategy. Ensure provision of strategic input into global medical planning, including areas of unmet need and customer priorities.
• Evidence Generation and Data Generation Plans
  Ensure robust evidence gap analysis for UK oncology assets. Contribute to the development of global Integrated Evidence Plans (IEPs) and ensure execution of the UK local evidence plan. Support and oversee appropriate use of local non-interventional studies, observational research, real-world evidence and other evidence generation activities in oncology, in line with governance and compliance requirements.
• Governance, Compliance and Medical Signatory Responsibilities
  As an experienced Medical Final Signatory or AQP, provide leadership on governance and compliance oversight for Oncology Medical activities in the UK. Champion and lead the application of the ABPI Code of Practice within the Oncology Medical team. Drive unwavering compliant work practices and support safe, ethical and appropriate use of research compounds and products. Ensure Medical review and approval processes are robust and timely, with appropriate risk management and documentation.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
  Establish and maintain a strong, supportive partnership with UK Oncology commercial colleagues, ensuring clear role boundaries and compliance with the ABPI Code. Collaborate closely with Market Access, Health Outcomes, Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Legal, Compliance and other cross-functional partners to support successful access and appropriate use of oncology medicines. Represent UK Oncology Medical Affairs in internal and external forums, including interactions with healthcare professionals, patient organisations and other key stakeholders, in line with GSK policies and the ABPI Code.
• Operational Excellence and Resource Management
  Manage all UK Oncology Medical activities within agreed scope, timelines and resources. Oversee basic financial and budget management for Oncology Medical Affairs, ensuring appropriate prioritisation and resource allocation. Monitor performance metrics and continuously seek opportunities to simplify, improve and innovate ways of working within the Oncology Medical team.

Basic Qualifications

• GMC-registered physician or UK-registered Pharmacist who is an ABPI Final Medical Signatory, with recent Oncology Medical Affairs experience or an appropriate alternative specialist therapy area; OR Significant matrix leadership experience through both UK and global/regional roles in oncology.
• Prior experience working as a Medical Director/Advisor with recent (within the past 12 months) experience of leading other leaders.
• Demonstrated understanding of the UK healthcare environment, including Health Technology Assessments (HTAs) and market access challenges.
• Strong understanding of pharmaceutical ethics and governance and clear understanding of pharmaceutical compliance policies and procedures.
• Demonstrable experience of leading others in the application of the ABPI Code of Practice.
• Basic financial and budget management experience.
• Prior experience with commercial product launches and expanded access programmes in relevant regions.
• Prior experience working with commercial and/or government payers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Robust understanding of internal and external codes of practice and regulations (with certification where applicable).
• Demonstrated matrix leadership experience, with the ability to build strong networks, manage complexity and work effectively across cultural and functional boundaries.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Proven ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects, budgets and stakeholder interactions simultaneously.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient.
• Outstanding listening, communication, collaborative teamwork and leadership skills, with experience interfacing with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
• General understanding of statistics, safety and regulatory requirements relevant to oncology medicines.
• Ability to balance scientific data with practical healthcare delivery needs across diverse health systems to optimise medical implementation of innovation.
