Glastonbury Surgery is looking to recruit an experienced General Practice Nurse to join our friendly, supportive multidisciplinary team. This is a part-time position of up to 30 hours per week, with a flexible working pattern. Please note that availability to work on Thursdays and Fridays is essential.

The successful candidate will provide high-quality nursing care to our patient population, working collaboratively with GPs, nursing colleagues, and the wider practice team. You will play a key role in the management of patients with long-term conditions and contribute to the ongoing development of nursing services within the practice.

Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse (NMC)
  • Qualification in long-term condition management
  • Previous experience working as a GP Practice Nurse

Main duties of the job:

  • Perform wound care using aseptic techniques
  • Undertake uncomplicated dressings, including leg ulcers
  • Suture and clip removal
  • Screening
  • Undertake opportunistic screening BP checks, height, weight, BMI, urinalysis, smoking status
  • Undertake opportunistic venepuncture
  • INR monitoring
  • Health Promotion
  • Provide healthy eating advice to individuals
  • Offer smoking cessation advice individually in opportunistic consultations
  • Provide individual advice to patients about increasing activity or exercise
  • Offer advice on recommended safe limits for alcohol consumption
  • Complete referrals as appropriate
  • Vaccinations and Immunisations
  • Administer injections under an individualised prescription or Patient Group Direction
  • Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs
  • Provide an adult and childhood immunisation service
  • Develop and work to Patient Group Directions for POMs
  • Ear Care
  • Undertake ear syringing - following appropriate training
  • Advise patients about safe ear care
  • Infection Control
  • Support patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures
  • Apply infection control measures within the practice according to local and national guidelines
  • Emergency Management
  • Competent in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques
  • Child Health Protection
  • Recognises the signs, symptoms and categories of child abuse
  • Men's Health
  • Raise awareness and give basic advice on issues covering Testicular self-examination, Incontinence and prostatic disease, Sexual health
  • Family Planning
  • Advise patients on available methods of contraception and refer as appropriate
  • Women’s Health
  • Advise patients on the national and local cervical cytology and mammography screening programmes
  • Travel Health Advice
  • Offer a holistic approach to travel health including comprehensive advice for patients prior to travel
  • Chronic Disease Management
  • The practice holds regular specialist practice nurse led chronic disease clinics for the following conditions: Diabetes, Heart Failure, Asthma & COPD.
  • Assist and support with management of a chronic disease clinic in line with qualifications.

Person Specification:

  • Registered General Nurse
  • Post registration chronic disease training in one or more of the following areas: Diabetes, Heart Failure, Asthma & COPD.
  • Good interpersonal skills and work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrable experience of providing quality care.
  • Able to communicate clearly at all levels.
  • Proven capability to use own judgement and initiative.
  • Comfortable working under pressure.
  • Tidy and presentable appearance.
  • Good IT skills - use of the Microsoft Office package
  • Experience of using EMIS Web.
