Our Building Standards & Public Safety service plays a crucial role in shaping this city.

We are offering an excellent opportunity to join our expanding Building Standards & Public Safety team as an Assistant Building Standards Surveyor. There are 6 permanent positions available. In this developmental role, you will support the delivery of a high-quality Building Standards service to meet verifier appointment criteria, statutory duties, NRS service targets and wider Council objectives. You will manage your own workload, maintain accurate records and help ensure compliance with statutory requirements. This role provides structured training and professional support, with a pathway toward full membership of a relevant professional institute and help progress to being a Building Standards Surveyor.

The post is located within Neighbourhoods, Regeneration and Sustainability and reports to a Team Manager for Building Standards & Public Safety.

Duties / What you will do:
  • Assist in assessing building warrant applications and completion submissions.
  • Support enforcement activities and compliance checks.
  • Contribute to public safety work relating to events, sports grounds, licensed venues and dangerous buildings.
  • Maintain accurate records to support statutory reporting and performance indicators.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver service priorities.

An HNC/HND in an appropriate construction discipline or being currently enrolled and working toward this qualification is an essential requirement of the role. A degree in an appropriate construction related discipline, construction related experience, and a full current driving licence are desirable.

Contract Details

  • Weekly Hours: 35 per week
  • Work Pattern: Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm
  • Annual Salary: £30,942.03 - £34,929.32 on an incremental scale
  • Please note that this will increase by 3.5% on 1st April 2026.
  • Hybrid working is available in this role.
