The Programme

The Mechanical Engineering Graduate Programme is designed for recent graduates beginning their careers in the water and wastewater industry. Through practical project experience, structured rotations, mentoring and professional development, you will gain an understanding of how multidisciplinary projects are designed, constructed, commissioned, operated and maintained.

There will be one 12-month in-depth rotation, as well as another two 6-month rotations across other areas of the business. Potential rotation areas include mechanical design, pre-contracts and estimating, project delivery, construction management, commissioning, asset management, operations, commercial or procurement functions.

Depending on business requirements and suitable opportunities, graduates may have the opportunity to complete one of the six-month rotations in Portugal or the UK. International placements are not guaranteed and will be subject to operational requirements, individual suitability and any applicable travel or work eligibility requirements.

The Role

As a Mechanical Engineering Graduate, you will work within multidisciplinary engineering and project delivery teams, supporting water and wastewater projects from design through mechanical installation, testing, commissioning, completion and handover. You will work alongside experienced professionals and take on greater responsibility as your technical knowledge and practical experience develop.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support multidisciplinary teams in planning, coordinating and delivering mechanical installation works across one or more projects.
  • Assist with mechanical design reviews, equipment and supplier proposals, procurement, material deliveries and subcontractor coordination.
  • Inspect and monitor mechanical works and equipment on site to confirm progress and conformance with project designs, specifications and programme requirements.
  • Support mechanical testing and commissioning, including site acceptance tests, inspection and test records, pipe pressure testing and hydrostatic tank testing.
  • Follow all health, safety, environmental, quality and sustainability requirements and assist with handover documentation, including operation and maintenance manuals and as-constructed drawings.

What We Are Looking For

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or expected completion before the programme begins.
  • A genuine interest in mechanical systems and sustainable water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, organisation and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive approach, willingness to learn and flexibility to work across office, site and rotation locations.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • A full driving licence and access to your own vehicle. Both are essential due to project locations and programme travel requirements.
  • Previous construction, engineering, infrastructure or water-sector experience gained through an internship, work placement, summer role or university project is beneficial but not essential.

What We Offer

  • A structured two-year programme comprising one in-depth 12-month rotation and two additional six-month rotations.
  • The potential opportunity to complete one six-month rotation in Portugal or the UK.
  • Hands-on experience on significant water and wastewater infrastructure projects across office and site environments.
  • Mentoring, structured learning and support in developing the competencies required for future professional accreditation.
  • A competitive graduate salary with annual reviews, a company laptop and phone, 22 days' annual leave plus applicable public holidays, and access to a confidential Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates may be considered for permanent roles within Glanua, subject to individual performance, suitable vacancies and business requirements.
