The Project Engineer will support the delivery of anaerobic digestion (AD) projects from concept through commissioning. This role combines engineering expertise, project coordination, and technical oversight to ensure that biogas and renewable energy facilities are designed, built, and operated safely and efficiently. The Project Engineer will work closely with the design team, sub-contractors, equipment suppliers and clients to deliver high-quality AD projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Planning & Coordination
- Assist in developing project scopes, schedules, budgets, and resource plans for AD facility construction and upgrade projects.
- Coordinate with internal teams, external contractors, technology providers, and regulatory bodies.
- Support permitting activities, including environmental impact assessments and regulatory submissions.
- Technical Engineering Support
- Review and interpret process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, mechanical and electrical GA drawings, and equipment specifications.
- Assist in technology selection and technical evaluation of vendor proposals.
- Project Execution & Site Monitoring
- Support construction oversight, ensuring all work aligns with project specifications, safety standards, and AD industry best practices.
- Conduct on-site inspections of mechanical, civil, electrical, and process engineering works.
- Track project progress, identify risks, and support mitigation plans to ensure successful project delivery.
- Quality, Compliance & Safety
- Ensure designs and installations comply with AD-specific regulations such as ATEX, DSEAR, environmental permitting, and pressure systems safety.
- Conduct quality checks on equipment installations, pipeline works, digesters, pumps, blowers, and CHP/biomethane systems.
- Prepare documentation for commissioning, performance testing, and handover procedures.
- Procurement & Cost Management
- Assist with procurement of key AD equipment (pumps, mixers, gas upgrading units, CHP engines, flare systems, feedstock handling systems).
- Review supplier quotations and support commercial assessments.
- Monitor costs and ensure projects remain within approved budgets.
- Commissioning & Performance Support
- Support the commissioning team.
- Help troubleshoot process or mechanical issues during start-up and early operation.
- Communication & Reporting
- Prepare regular project status updates, risk registers, and engineering documentation.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to stakeholders, including clients and non-engineering staff.
- Maintain accurate project records, drawings, and as-built documentation.
