Job Summary
Principal purpose of the job
To effectively manage the Shift Engineers, within a safe & healthy environment, to consistently deliver both short and long term Engineering targets, on time. Drive high standards of product safety & quality, through the consistent delivery of housekeeping, buildings and plant maintenance plus relevant training requirements. Embed a culture of continuous improvement throughout the team.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Health, Safety & Welfare
- Nothing is so important that it can’t be done safely; the welfare of your colleagues is paramount and you must promote and support a safe working environment and foster a culture of “safety first”.
- Ensure the working environment, equipment, plant and people meet with legislative and internal health and safety standards at all times. Where hazards are identified and risk levels are deemed unacceptable immediate action must be taken by you to remove the hazard or where this is not possible reduce the risk to acceptable levels.
- Ensure the requirements of the GPN (Middlesbrough) PTW system are implemented and controlled as appropriate.
- Support and drive the business accident prevention initiatives through the reporting of potential accidents through the Near Miss Reporting tool by you and your team.
- Food Safety & Legality
- Maintaining the integrity of our products and therefore the business itself is an absolute. You must ensure this is always the case as we never knowingly compromise product safety.
- Be certain that maintenance and breakdown works meet both GMP and HACCP requirements at all times. Maintain the required high standard of housekeeping and GMP across the site at all times.
- Quality
- Never knowingly compromise on quality; pursue Customer Fixation and show Passion for our Brands by striving for the highest possible standards of quality in our products, people and plant.
- Ensure all equipment and plant is maintained to a level that allows the Production of products that meet the requirements of the internal specifications and are produced in line with the Quality Management System.
- Ensure your team communicate any necessary amendments or deviations to the Technical Department.
- Support the Technical team in ensuring all Fabrication requirements as highlighted via external audits, pest control visits and internal processes are completed in good time and to the required standards.
- Ensure any new equipment or modifications to existing equipment are highlighted to the Technical Department to ensure appropriate action is taken to assess the impact on product safety / quality before it is used.

- Ensure all members of your team are completely conversed with the KPI and business targets and how their role can influence achievement.
- Make all measures clear and unambiguous for all, with regular good quality feedback encouraged at all levels.
- Attend and represent your team at the key site meetings ensuring you are prepared to give factual feedback on your team’s performance and how you are working with other functions to meet production and site targets.
- Provide the detail necessary for full and complete reporting of the performance of your team on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis via the provided KPI tools and SAP and Shift Engineer reports for your team.
- Planning & Control
- Effective preparation to meet the Maintenance Plans and wherever possible effectively 'early warn' against future problems and issues whilst identifying solutions.
- Attend the planning meeting to communicate opportunities in the plan to maximise efficiencies and reduce planned changeovers and unplanned events.
- Provide Engineering Support for customer visits and off site meetings as appropriate.
- Ensure all contractors are managed in line with the GPN Middlesbrough Policy and that their activities are managed and conducted in a way that will not put themselves, GPN Employees or GPN products at risk.
- Cost & Efficiencies
- Achieving required output with minimum wasted effort, time and expense; meet standards consistently to achieve the cost base to continue our growth and drive world class Performance, whilst always striving to Find a Better Way.
- Ensure effective cost control through best use of all resources including spare parts, consumables, internal labour and external support to minimise all wastes and maximise efficiency.
- Maintain spares holding at levels that are adequate to support operations, whilst minimising the amount of capital tied up.
- Ensure labour standards are met at all times and provide analysis of labour usage as required.
- Environment
- Your role is at GPN Middlesbrough, which is a typical modern food manufacturing environment. You will spend time in both external and internal locations where temperature, noise, dust and inclement weather conditions will be factors in the working environment. You may be required to work in other areas of the business from time to time.

- Previous food industry experience essential in an equivalent position
- HND standard of education
- Advanced Food Hygiene and Health & Safety
- HACCP Certification
- CMMS experience
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook) and SAP if possible
