The Opportunity

Provide Leadership in the fields of Health, Safety & Environmental controls for all site personnel in order to meet HSE, regulatory and Glanbia requirements. Define & deliver strategies aligned to site & company goals to improve safety and safety compliance to drive value to the business. Responsible for the design, specification, implementation and ongoing maintenance of relevant processes, systems & projects to deliver performance improvement in key EHS KPIs. Drive a high level of engagement to Operational Teams and collaborating functions aligned to Glanbia’s Values and manage and support site safety training & auditing to continuously improve EHS standards.

Job Responsibilities

  • Be an advocate for GPN values, encourage all staff to live these in their working lives & provide leadership to yours and wider matrix teams supporting diversity and inclusion programs.
  • Ensure the working environment, equipment, plant and people meet with legislative and internal environmental, health and safety standards at all times.
  • Where deficiencies developed to mitigate the risks or cease operations.
  • Co-ordinate the site departments to complete the risk assessment program for their areas, and where required complete assessments yourself, according to scheduled requirements.
  • Support and drive business accident prevention initiatives through the development and implementation of Capital projects, new systems processes, training and procedures to drive continuous improvement on EHS.
  • Ensure that all actions generated from assessments, accidents and incidents are tracked and closed out effectively, monitoring their quality to maintain the highest standards and ensure best practice delivery.
  • Ensure the GPN (Middlesbrough) Health, Safety and Welfare Manual and related documents are maintained and reviewed in line with legislation, HSE Approved Codes of Practice and Glanbia standards.
  • Manage the various EHS systems including, Intelex Accident Incident Recording Database, and any other systems and provide reports and analysis to the Leadership Team as required.
  • Manage all legal environmental requirements, including controlled waste and water effluent discharge.
  • Manage and maintain the ISO14001 site certification.
  • Manage the TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) activities to support accreditation as part of the GPN Sustainability strategy.
  • Complete Packaging Obligation submissions for GPN (UK) and manage commitments to Waste and EPR regulations.
  • Ensure security requirements are risk assessed, implemented and are in line with GPN standards.
  • Manage external audits including the HSE, GRMS, BCP and our insurers and ensure any areas for improvement are targeted with effective action plans.
  • Support Internal Safety Inspections and BRCGS, Customer, Regulatory & Ethical audits to verify compliance.
  • Working with HR, develop and coordinate an effective Health Surveillance program for all employees based on job exposures/risks.
  • Interface with the Regulatory Authorities (HSE, Environment Agency, Northumbrian Water, etc) and Insurers on key matters such as Fire Risk Assessments, RIDDOR reporting, Emergency Planning & EHS Improvement Plans.
  • Develop & deliver EH&S training where required.
  • Act as content owner/validator for any EHS related training including the employee induction.
  • Provide support to employees in understanding their key accountabilities with regard to EHS performance.
  • Auditing, monitoring, reviewing and implementing health and safety policies, working practices, safety procedures and standards for all respective operations.
  • Act as Risk Controller with regard to Employee Liability/Insurance claims and ensure a due diligence approach to accident/incident investigation and claims management.
  • Develop, coach and mentor SEAT (area safety teams) across the business unit to become an effective front line tool in implementing, challenging, supporting and delivering GPN EHS targets and goals.
  • Manage local processes on Safety communication and participate in those held across GPN as part of the HSLT.
  • Maintain and complete EHS KPI reporting in appropriate systems to facilitate performance measurement.
  • Prepare and deliver the EHS budget through reviewing any assumptions made, challenging constraints and highlighting any step-cost changes.
  • Ensure effective cost control through best use of all resources.
  • Participate in Daily Direction Setting across Operations to deliver improvements and prioritise resources to impact Safety.

The Skills you will bring to the team

  • Experience as a EHS Manager with a proven track record in delivering improvements in a fast paced environment and collaborative positive approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to motivate and engage teams with effective coaching and development to support day to day accountability in activity execution to support business growth opportunities.
  • Ability to act at pace and think strategically with developed Project & Change Management.
  • Waste Obligations and compliance to EPR Knowledge and Experience of Continuous Improvement & Manufacturing Systems to impact KPIs is preferred.
  • 5+ years in operations preferably in FMCG business and in an EH&S role with previous food industry experience.
  • A relevant EHS Degree or NEBOSH Diploma in H&S and/or Environmental Management.
  • Chartered Member of IOSH or IEMA (Or working towards this may be acceptable).
  • Good computer literacy including SAP if possible.
