Role Purpose
The Project Manager – Rail will be responsible for leading and delivering projects within a serviced rail environment, ensuring efficient execution from initial quotation through to completion. This role requires a technically minded professional with strong rail industry experience who is comfortable operating between workshop and office settings. The individual will act as a key interface between customers, operations, and internal stakeholders, driving high standards of service delivery while contributing to the ongoing growth and development of the organisation’s rail capability.
Accountability
- Manage end-to-end delivery of rail service projects, ensuring timelines, quality, and budget expectations are met.
- Act as a primary point of contact for customers, maintaining strong and professional relationships.
- Prepare, review, and manage project quotations, ensuring accuracy and commercial awareness.
- Coordinate closely with workshop teams to ensure efficient planning, scheduling, and delivery of work.
- Produce regular project reports, updates, and technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- Interpret technical requirements and translate them into clear project plans and deliverables.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within rail service operations.
- Work collaboratively with procurement and operations teams to support project delivery (where applicable).
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety requirements, and quality processes.
- Contribute to the development and growth of the rail service offering through client engagement and identifying opportunities.
Person Specification
- Significant experience within the rail industry, ideally in servicing, maintenance, or overhaul environments.
- Strong technical understanding of rail diesel & electric rolling stock, components, and workshop operations.
- Background in a hands-on rail or workshop-based role, with the ability or desire to move into a project-focused position.
- Ideally with experience managing or coordinating projects, including planning, scheduling, and delivery.
- Ability to prepare quotations, technical reports, and client-facing documentation with commercial awareness.
- Strong customer-facing skills with experience building and maintaining client relationships.
- Familiarity with rail industry terminology, standards, and regulated operating environments.
- Formal qualification in Engineering, Rail Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Project management certification (e.g. PRINCE2, APM, PMP) and/or relevant rail, health and safety certifications (e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH) desirable.
- Experience or exposure to procurement, contract management, and/or business growth initiatives within a rail or engineering context.
- Knowledge of ISO9001, 14001 & 45001 + audit experience desirable.
