At our GKN Global Technology Centre, we specialise in the research and development of the future of powered flight. We have a new exciting and career defining opportunity for a Senior Research Engineer – Stress, Design & Weights – to join our growing Hydrogen Systems Engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the green revolution in aviation, a project that aligns with our company mission, “To be the most Trusted and Sustainable Partner in the Sky”. Reporting to the Principal Research Engineer for Design, you will be responsible for accurate modelling and simulation of cryogenic and ambient hardware in standard finite element modelling toolsets. This role will be based at our Bristol GTC, however travel will be expected including occasional international.

Responsibilities

  • Stress and mechanical analysis as required for system development and integrity assessments – including CTE compliance analysis for cryogenic systems.
  • Design engineering skills – capable of 3D modelling in Catia V5 and DMU management in a PDLM environment (Windchill).
  • Weights and mass conversant – able to calculate and undertake typical aircraft mass balance accountancy.
  • Able to act as an innovative problem solver with good influencing and presentation skills.
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity with experience building models with limited or incomplete requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master Degree in relevant engineering discipline.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience gained within stress and mechanical design analysis and/or component design.
  • Catia V5 conversant with PDLM knowledge.
  • Must be capable of building, meshing and running FEA/FEM models for structural analysis.
  • Experience in weights accountancy and mass balance calculations.
  • Manipulation/generation of 3D/2D geometry models – must be familiar with GD&T specific marking and supporting mechanical design practices.
  • Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills including technical report writing.

Desirable

  • Manufacturing specification, GD&T and detail drawing capability for system.
  • BoM management and supplier data management approaches.
  • Familiarity with cryogenic design standards and processes.
  • Proven expertise in MBSE methodologies and engineering tools (e.g. PTC Windchill, Codebeamer, Sparks EA, COMsol, Ansys, SimCentre etc).
