Position: Senior Design Engineer – Transparencies Team
The role is based at our Luton manufacturing plant and involves supporting new and existing programmes including fast-jet canopies, helicopter windscreens and flight deck windows.
This is more than a CAD role; as the Senior Design Engineer you will represent design in an integrated product team and lead design activities and projects to support your product group, including the creation and maintenance of product definition and ensuring ongoing product performance against requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse customer requirements and define technical solutions for bids and proposals within assigned programmes.
- Develop, check and approve technical solutions and compliance documentation for work packages to ensure they meet all relevant customer, regulatory and airworthiness requirements within agreed programme, schedule and manufacturing constraints.
- Identify, assess and mitigate technical risks relevant to the work package.
- Act as Lead Design Engineer in Integrated Program Teams (IPT) and Material Review Board (MRB).
- Define and validate test methods or alternate means of compliance (analysis/similarity) as required to demonstrate design solution compliance.
- Produce permits, concessions, rework schemes and provide technical support to resolve non-conforming products, designs and documentation.
- Lead design activities for internal and external technical reviews, including formal gate reviews and preparation of technical data, drawings and presentations.
- Mentor, train and develop junior team members.
- Support GKN’s “Great Place to Work” initiatives and core workplace principles.
Experience, Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor or equivalent accredited engineering qualification.
- Strong engineering background with knowledge of aircraft ice protection systems, transparencies or related areas.
- Experience in requirements management, geometric design, materials selection, tooling, manufacturing process development and assembly methods.
- Experience with MRB, customer concession management, engineering change management and in-service technical support.
- Project management skills, evidence-based decision making and problem-solving approach.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to present to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Adaptable, actively seeking to improve technical knowledge through study, training and professional development.
- UK National Security Vetting (UKNSV) Security clearance (SC) required; UK residency of minimum 5 years.
- Operational & Working Conditions
Core hours: Monday to Thursday 07:30-16:30, Friday 07:30-12:30.
Some flexibility may be available and there may be an opportunity to work from home one day per week.
Occasional UK travel may be required.
