GKN's Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and manufacturing process development facility which is a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It includes a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK's CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace's UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK's Industrial strategy.
The Engineering Team Lead will be based at our GTC site in Bristol or in Cowes Isle of Wight. This is a newly created position for our development programmes in our defence portfolio. The Global Defence organisations are aiming to be supporting UK MOD initiatives to remain at the leading edge of Air Systems development to protect its people, project influence and promote prosperity. Their Combat Air Strategy defines how the RAF/Royal Navy seeks to create operational advantage to enable the UK to achieve its military and strategic objectives. GKN is involved in 6th Gen programmes and intends to expand its position in FCAS by developing aerostructure and related systems.
The Engineering Team Lead will design, manufacture and assemble key components as part of an accelerated technology development programme that includes flying demonstrators. The role will manage delivery of Engineering Work Packages/Tasks to meet Programme and Business Objectives and lead a team of 10 to 20 colleagues across Bristol and the Isle of Wight, with monthly UK travel as required. Hybrid working is available (up to two days per week from home) depending on business needs.
Job Responsibilities
- Delivery of the Engineering Deliverables meeting the applicable Technical Requirements (including Manufacturability, Certification / Qualification Requirements) against agreed Schedule and Cost Objectives.
- Implementation and Execution of Cost & Schedule Control: NRC Planning, Tracking / Control and Reporting through Earned Value Management (EVM).
- Support Chief Engineer in the Execution of Programme Risk Management by identifying Technical Risks and determining associated Mitigation Actions.
- Initiating Corrective Measures in the Case of Deviations from the planned Schedule & Budget Objectives.
- Managing Change & Scope Control.
- Provides input to the internal Change Control Process, supporting the Chief Engineer in the Customer Change Control Board Process.
- Providing day-to-day Operational Management to the Engineering Project Team.
- Ensuring Application of effective (Design-Build Team) Best/Working Practices & Standards and encouraging a culture of continuous improvement including Lean Initiatives.
- Contributing to establishing Knowledge and Experience (Knowledge Management, Tool and Process Enhancements and Lessons Learned) for the Function.
- Providing effective Communication within the (Programme) Team and with Stakeholders outside the Team.
- Acting as Link to other Internal Departments as Operations and Procurement to provide General Support and to achieve Specific Agreements on Manufacturing Philosophy, Design-to-Cost, Supplier Quotations, etc.
- Identification of Work Packages suitable for Off-load to external Suppliers including drafting Statements of Work.
- Supporting Functional Heads in the PDP Process (Job Appraisals, Career Development Reviews).

- Essential: Bachelor or Master Degree in (Aerospace) Engineering or equivalent working and thinking level gained through experience.
- High level of engineering functional knowledge across multiple disciplines in order to successfully manage/guide the project/programme technical team.
- Problem solving skills in both technical and programme management disciplines.
- Management of complex Projects; ability to rationalise, assess and evaluate information that may not always be clear or mature.
- Ability to clearly present data, reports and presentations to facilitate the decision making process at all levels of the business.
- Desirable: Experience in dealing with related functions (Operations/Production, Sales/Customer Relationship Management, Supplier Management and Development).
- Ability to mentor and coach Engineers in the Delivery of their specific task and supporting their professional growth.

The position requires UK National Security Vetting (UKNSV) Security clearance (SC) due to the nature and responsibilities of the work carried out. In order for us to obtain an SC you usually need to have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 5 years to current date (but we do assess each case individually).
