We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer on a permanent basis to join a global leader in process and packaging technology, dedicated to delivering intelligent and sustainable solutions for the pharmaceutical and food industries. I’m ideally looking for someone with experience in food packaging machinery, or transferable skills from similar fields such as industrial or agricultural equipment, oil & gas, or water treatment industries. Our client needs someone with experience managing, leading, coaching, or mentoring other employees, which is essential.
Your Role: Mechanical Design Engineer
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in designing innovative solutions for both customer and development projects. You will collaborate with global teams, contribute creative ideas, and ensure the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform mechanical design work for customer and development projects.
- Attend specification meetings with global customers, providing expert input on mechanical design aspects.
- Take ownership of all mechanical aspects of projects, offering technical guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with electrical and mechanical design engineers to ensure fully coordinated project designs.
- Travel occasionally to UK and international destinations as required by project needs.
- Generate creative concepts, design schemes, parts lists, assembly drawings, and detailed drawings.
- Complete engineering designs on time, adhering to project plans and cost targets.
- Conduct risk assessments on machinery and assemblies, advising on mechanical Health and Safety aspects.
Salary Package:
- Competitive Annual Salary – £51,000-£57,000 (DOE)

What We’re Looking For:
Knowledge and Skills:
- Proven experience in designing electro-mechanical mechanisms and equipment.
- Advanced 3D modelling skills (SolidWorks preferred; sheet metal experience is a plus).
- Strong understanding of design for manufacture and assembly, with a focus on cost efficiency.
- Proficiency in reading and producing 2D production drawings, including GD&T.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and analysis.
- Confidence to lead technical aspects of larger projects.
- Knowledge of machinery directives and UKCA/CE marking.
Qualifications:
- Engineering degree (Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Integrated) or minimum HNC qualification.
- 5-10 years of experience in a Design/Development Engineering role.
- Familiarity with packaging machinery, safety and hygienic considerations, ergonomics, and aesthetics.
- Experience with paper/carton feeding mechanisms, product handling equipment, servo motion technology, pneumatic systems, and materials (e.g., stainless steels, plastics, composites).
