Location: Enfield

Salary: Circa £50,000 + London Weighting + Performance related bonus

Shift Pattern: Monday – Friday – daytime shift

You’ll be the driving force behind keeping our HGV fleet roadworthy, compliant, and performing at its absolute best. This is a hands-on role where you will operate from the heart of the VMU. What you’ll be doing

  • Safety, Compliance & Quality: Champion safety leadership, preventative maintenance, quality assurance, MOT planning, accident/non-compliance investigations and adhere to HSE and legal standards
  • VMU Operations & Performance: Lead VMU performance, overseeing workflow, fleet availability reporting, service planning, compliance and contractor management to ensure efficient service delivery
  • People Leadership & Development: Support, motivate and develop the team through clear goals, regular communication, recruitment, performance management and fostering innovation
  • Resource & Parts Management: Manage SLAs, staffing cover, spare parts inventory (SPI), warranty claims, tools/equipment maintenance and calibration
  • Financial & Project Management: Control and forecast budgets, negotiate best-value purchasing, reduce costs, and deliver projects on time and within budget
  • Operational & Customer Focus: Maintain operational plans aligned to customer expectations, ensure contract compliance, minimise production disruption, and meet driver/legal requirements
  • Continuous Improvement & Business Collaboration: Drive VMU improvements, investigate service failures, enhance reliability and wellbeing, collaborate cross-functionally (e.g., fuel/maintenance), and provide FEM cover when required

Who you are

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
  • Proven experience in managing or leading a Heavy Goods VMU/workshop team
  • A solid understanding of compliance, health & safety, and preventative maintenance
  • Strong leadership skills — you’re a team builder, not just a task manager
  • Budget, parts, and contractor management experience
  • A hands-on leader who can handle the tools and the strategy
