GIR Construction Solutions Ltd is seeking an Assistant Building Surveyor / Technical Surveyor to support the delivery of residential and insurance-related technical work across inspections, defect analysis, technical reporting, and remedial scoping. This role is suited to someone with early-stage but relevant experience in building surveying, residential defects, housing disrepair, stock condition work, or related technical property assessment. This is a technically led role. Project coordination experience is welcome, but the position is not intended to be a pure project management role.
The successful candidate will support inspections, research, report drafting, and case delivery, while developing their technical capability within a live consultancy environment.
Key responsibilities- Assist with property inspections and condition assessments across residential and related building matters.
- Review photographs, site records, and supporting documentation to identify visible defects and relevant technical issues.
- Draft structured technical notes, inspection reports, and supporting client-facing documentation.
- Assist in diagnosing likely causes of building defects, while clearly distinguishing between observation, inference, and limitation.
- Carry out targeted technical research and apply findings appropriately to live matters.
- Support the preparation of remedial recommendations, high-level scopes of work, defect schedules, and evidence matrices.
- Assist with internal trackers, supporting documents, and chronological records required for live project and insurance-related cases.
- Liaise with internal teams to ensure outputs are accurate, clear, and defensible.
- Provide general technical support across the department as required.
- 1–5 years’ relevant experience in building surveying, residential defects, housing disrepair, stock condition surveying, technical property inspections, or similar.
- Good understanding of common residential building defects, including damp, moisture ingress, cracking, timber decay, roofing, drainage, and general building fabric issues.
- Experience preparing written reports or technical notes in a professional environment.
- Ability to work with incomplete information and assess issues using available evidence.
- Relevant qualification in Building Surveying, Construction, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Good written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
- Experience in defects-related technical reporting or advisory work.
- Experience with remedial recommendations or schedules of work.
- Familiarity with relevant guidance, standards, and technical references used in defect assessment.
- Full UK driving licence.
The ideal candidate will be methodical, observant, and able to think clearly under uncertainty. They should be comfortable working in a technical environment where accuracy, judgement, and written quality matter. They do not need to be senior, but they must be able to contribute meaningfully without requiring constant supervision for basic tasks.
What good looks like in the first 3 months- Attending inspections and recording defects in a structured way.
- Producing usable first drafts with limited rework.
- Carrying out targeted research without being spoon-fed.
- Supporting evidence packs, trackers, and technical case documents.
- Saving team time rather than adding to review burden.
As part of your application, please submit:
- Your CV
- A short covering note outlining your relevant experience in building assessments, technical reporting, and defect-related work
- One or two examples of technical notes, reports, or similar documents you have personally produced, where possible
- Redacted documents are acceptable, provided they clearly demonstrate your own technical reasoning and written work.
