Overview
Gilbert Ward Academy is a brand-new, state-of-the-art secondary special school opened in September 2023, located in Blyth, Northumberland. The academy serves 80 pupils with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and offers exceptional education for students with SEMH or autism. The Academy is part of the Prosper Learning Trust, a trusted provider of specialist education across five schools in the region.
Responsibilities
- Work in close collaboration with teachers, other school staff and supporting professionals to support the delivery of high-quality teaching and learning for pupils.
- Help pupils to overcome barriers to learning, develop their social and emotional skills, and achieve their full potential.
- Contribute to the development of a positive and inclusive learning environment that meets the needs of all pupils.
- Support planning, monitoring and assessment of pupils’ progress and attend team meetings.
Qualifications
- Level 3 qualification related to education (e.g. Teaching Assistant or Nursery Nurse).
- Experience of advancing pupils’ progress within a learning environment or relevant experience of working with vulnerable adults or children.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to manage time well to meet competing demands.
- High motivation and resilience; reliability and a positive attitude.
- Experience of working in a team with a flexible approach and a commitment to learning and equality.

- Harry Watts Academy – Special School academy for pupils with a diagnosis of autism (5‑16 years).
- Jarrow Special School – Planned new Free School academy for pupils with SEMH (4‑11 years).
