Graduate Mechanical & Electrical Coordinator

Summary of role

Reporting to Project Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) Coordinator, the post holder will be responsible for assisting on all MEP activities on the projects allocated to them, this will include assisting with the appointing, managing and monitoring progress of MEP Consultants / Designers and MEP sub-contractors. Ensuring that the design is progressed in such a manner as to achieve all the contracted deliverables, whilst maximising commercial opportunities and ensuring that all design information and technical submittals are released in lines with the requirements of the project construction programme and procurement schedule.

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the contents of the Employers Requirements and Performance specifications, look for opportunities to develop the detailed design to maximise margins and reduce latent risks to Gilbert‑Ash.
  • Negotiate and execute the appointments, scope and fees of consultants and designers.
  • Prepare MEP design programmes and Technical Submissions Schedules, get designers and specialist sub‑contractor buy‑in to these timescales and then manage the process and monitor progress during the project.
  • Provide an M&E coordination/integration service to the construction teams on specific projects to ensure that the Construction Team fully understand how the MEP works interact with the build activities. Convey to the team key dates for BWICS, dust free rooms and dates, plinth requirements, critical services routes.
  • Manage the M&E contractors during the design and construction phases of a project to ensure quality and time parameters are achieved.
  • Review key MEP materials, plant and interfaces to ensure they are fit for purpose and provide long‑term durable solutions without exposing Gilbert‑Ash to unnecessary latent maintenance or H&S risks.
  • Review all MEP design information to ensure it is clear, complete, meets statutory / CIBSE requirements, complies with the ERs and is fully coordinated with all other disciplines.
  • Organise, schedule and chair technical meetings with members of the design team and supply chain, during the pre and construction phases of the project. Generate technical queries and monitor response performance.
  • Attend Client meetings to report on MEP design release/ design development progress, ensuring support and guidance is offered to the client in relation to requests and their obligations in the building MEP design.
  • Chair MEP services technical meetings and report on MEP progress ensuring the construction and installation are developing as planned to the contracts team on a regular basis.
  • Review tender drawings and assist the Estimating team in understanding any gaps or risks within the tender MEP design.
  • Manage the MEP RFI process, raise the RFI, chase the relevant party, report on progress and close out.
  • Manage the MEP DAR (Document Approval Request) process, raise the RFI, chase the relevant party, report on progress and close out.
  • Manage the MEP Sample approval process, in a timeous manner, chase the relevant party, report on progress and close out. This applies both to Planning requirements and sample requirements within the ERs.
  • Oversee the MEP parts of the BREEAM tracker, ensure all MEP designers and sub‑contractors fulfil the requirements and provide the evidence for credits allocated to them.
  • Provide technical / commercial support to the project surveyor, in relation to MEP design development, VE, potential variations and settlement of final accounts.
  • Manage and contribute to the compilation of the project handover documentation, MEP O&M manuals, Building User Guides, EPC, SBEM, certificates and as‑built information.
  • Attend Client meetings as and when necessary and report on MEP aspects of the project.
  • Oversee and manage the validation, commissioning and client familiarisation training of systems as required by the contract.
  • Participate in pre‑tender submissions and produce programmes and answers to MEP questions to support the construction logic.
  • Attend and present on the status of new and existing projects at Client interviews.
  • Continually update services team and construction staff on current MEP services management best practise.
  • Develop construction staff knowledge of MEP services, particularly in relation to awareness of scope, installation logistics, programme, and commissioning strategy.
  • Carry out investigations on unforeseen services issues on projects both current and past. Produce reports with recommendations and solutions.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of own activity related to projects on Gateway to ensure traceability.
  • Ensure that the project meets building regulations, health and safety requirements as well as fulfilling the health, safety and welfare responsibilities as detailed in the Company’s Policy and in compliance with the Safe‑T‑C et management system.
  • Maintain quality and environmental control procedures in accordance with ISO 9001and ISO 14001.
  • Establish, maintain and build good relations with clients as well as their representatives.
  • Create and maintain good relations with MEP Consultants, and contractors.
  • Control and monitor site waste in accordance with the Company’s Site Waste Minimisation and Management Policy.
  • Continually develop knowledge of innovative construction techniques and products to enhance the business and fulfil company CPD requirements.
  • Undertake all relevant training and development activities as required.
  • Attend Industry dinners, functions, seminars etc., as required on behalf of the Company.
  • Contribute to the Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

Person specification

Required Experience:

  • Sound understanding of the construction process.
  • Working to tight deadlines.
  • Preparing, producing and presenting reports.
  • Relevant technical knowledge.
  • Ability to read architectural drawings.
  • Understanding of building law and regulations.
  • Previous work experience within the building/construction industry.

Required Education:

  • On track to achieve a 2:1 or above in a degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or a relevant based subject).
  • GCSE Maths and English.
  • CIOB Accreditation.
  • Recognised First Aid at Work Qualification.

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Leadership Skills.

  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Ability to manage and motivate workforce at all levels.
  • Excellent written and oral skills.
