About Us
Gigawatt Industries is a leading Independent Connections Provider (ICP) specialising in EV charging infrastructure, delivering the high-voltage and low-voltage connections that power the UK’s transition to electric vehicles. We provide a full turnkey service covering all electrical and civil works, taking projects from initial concept and DNO/IDNO approvals through to installation and final commissioning. Working with leading Charge Point Operators (CPOs) and a fast-growing fleet customer base, we are building a strong pipeline of projects nationwide. Our culture is dynamic, commercially focused, and refreshingly free from corporate red tape - decision-makers are accessible, ideas are welcomed, and the work has a genuine impact on the UK’s energy transition.
The Role
The Design & Estimating Engineer will support our growth in EV charging connections, spanning our valued ChargePoint Operator clients and our growing fleet proposition. The role focuses on developing clients’ sites through the tendering and pre-construction phase, right through to handover to the delivery team. This includes overseeing the design phase, managing subcontractors and internal resource to ensure we secure DNO and IDNO approval, and producing a best-practice construction pack. It would be beneficial if the post-holder is able to undertake electrical designs themselves.
Working alongside Sales, Estimating and Delivery, this is a client-facing role. You will liaise with strategic clients and work with internal and external stakeholders to develop designs, installation programmes and commercial models that are accurate, reflective of scope and which mitigate operational and commercial risk. The role may involve site surveys where appropriate and taking the lead in weekly client meetings.
Governance matters to us. You will be responsible for checking designs before they are issued to clients, establishing design review meetings with the Estimator and Project Managers as needed, and coaching the wider, non-technical members of the team on design fundamentals. Building close working relationships with the Project Managers and delivery team is critical to ensuring a seamless client experience and to driving the continuous improvement of our processes.
Key Responsibilities
- At current project volumes, the role has a dual remit, anticipated as a 50:50 split between estimation and overseeing the design process. The balance will flex with workload and as the team scales.
Estimation:
- Identify design solutions for individual sites, undertake value engineering, and lead the tendering process and commercial model.
- Manage the client interface during pre-construction: produce initial concept layouts, oversee the iterative change process, resolve queries, attend meetings and take projects through to quotation.
- Build pricing models from multiple data sources, work with Project Managers to define scope, and stress-test commercial competitiveness and profit margin.
- Partner with the Senior Estimator to continuously improve the cost model and supporting processes, and provide peer review of each other’s work.
Design management:
- Coordinate the full design stage, including lease plan drawings and construction drawings, to meet client specifications.
- Build and manage a framework of external design suppliers — overseeing workload, quality and service through regular communication.
- Manage internal resource for the production of post-meter construction packs.
- Develop the design templates and own the design drawing register.
- Coordinate with Project Managers and the Estimator to peer-review external designs.
- Coordinate the DNO and IDNO design approval process with external suppliers.
- Ideally, undertake electrical design post-meter — including being a key part of the governance process for checking subcontractors’ work — and produce electrical design reports.
- Coordinate the handover debrief of won projects to the delivery team.
- Work with colleagues across the business to resolve client or project difficulties as they arise.
About You
We are looking for someone who combines commercial rigour with technical curiosity, and who thrives in a fast-paced environment where they can build relationships and get things done.
ESSENTIAL
- Right to work in the UK — we are unable to offer sponsorship for this role.
- Full UK driving licence, for periodic site visits.
- Strong electrical background, with confidence working across switchgear, cables and earthing and ideally in HV/LV connection projects.
- Demonstrable estimating or commercial experience: building pricing models, analysing numerical data, working with profit margins and assessing competitiveness.
- Advanced Excel skills, with experience of building or maintaining structured cost models.
- Excellent stakeholder management — comfortable holding pricing, scope and programme conversations with clients, and building relationships based on mutual respect.
- Proven ability to manage a portfolio of concurrent projects, track progress and drive them through obstacles to completion.
- A self-starter who is comfortable in a dynamic, low-bureaucracy environment.
DESIRABLE
- Level 3 Electrical qualification (or equivalent).
- Experience in EV charging, ideally in DNO/IDNO connections, or wider utility infrastructure.
- Experience producing post-meter electrical designs and design reports.
- Experience coaching or mentoring non-technical colleagues on technical topics.
What We Offer
- Salary of £50,000 – £60,000 per annum, depending on experience.
- Discretionary annual bonus.
- Pension scheme.
- Generous annual leave plus bank holidays.
- Hybrid working, with travel to client sites where required.
- Access to ongoing training and professional development.
- A fast-moving culture with direct access to decision-makers.
