This role sits within giffgaff’s broadband engineering space, with a strong focus on backend development, building the services and platforms that power a seamless, reliable connectivity experience for members. You’ll be responsible for designing, developing and maintaining scalable, fault‑tolerant systems that support everything from hardware interactions to customer‑facing services, ensuring performance and reliability are at the heart of what you deliver.
Working as part of a cross‑functional product engineering team, you’ll collaborate closely with hardware specialists, customer teams and fellow engineers to continuously evolve and improve the platform. While the role is primarily backend‑focused, there is the opportunity to contribute to frontend development when needed, using modern technologies to deliver end‑to‑end solutions. You’ll work with a contemporary tech stack including Java, Spring Boot and AWS on the backend, alongside React and TypeScript on the frontend, all within a culture that champions pair programming, test‑driven development and continuous delivery.

The must haves:
- Strong experience with Java and Spring Boot for backend development
- Proven experience in test‑driven development, pair programming and clean coding practices
- Solid understanding of system design and building scalable, resilient services
- Experience with observability and a "you build it, you run it" mindset
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively within cross‑functional teams

- Experience with event‑driven architecture, microservices or distributed systems
- Exposure to frontend development using React or TypeScript
