Gibraltar - Consultant Haematologist

This role is located in a British Overseas Territory, therefore UK legislation such as the Data Protection Act and the Equality Act (2010), or similar, may not apply. The successful applicant will be the sole Haematologist in Gibraltar, overseeing the pan Haematology service for all GHA entitled patients. This includes providing clinical oversight to the haematology section and transfusion service, working in partnership with the Pathology Services Manager, to ensure appropriate operational governance and regulatory compliance, as well as responsibility for the care of inpatients and outpatients with haematological conditions. The Consultant will join a medical team of 10 Consultant Physicians, many of whom are also single handed specialists. The post holder will be required to participate in on call duties for haematological advice, most of which can be provided remotely and without the need for out of hours attendance on site.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate would be expected to provide a high level haematology service (out-patients clinics and laboratory in-patient services) during their contracted term. This will involve close working with colleagues in Primary Care Centre, Radiology, Medicine and Surgery. If appropriate or desirable and the appointee were to develop an area of special interest, additional responsibilities may accrue. The post holder will be expected to actively participate and provide clinical leadership as part of the Anti-Coagulation Clinic, Haemato-Oncology and Haematology Diagnostic Services. The appointee should expect to contribute to the organisation, promotion and administration of the Haematology section. The post holder will also be required to participate in teaching undergraduate medical students as well as nursing and medical colleagues. The post holder will be expected to provide leadership to the care and management of acute haematology problems for in-patients in the wards with the support of the non-consultant doctors in St Bernards Hospital. The post holder will be clinically responsible for all aspects of the donation and transfusion service to ensure compliance with the Public Health, (blood safety and blood quality) Act 2017. The post holder will be expected to chair the Hospital Transfusion Committee meetings and develop guidelines.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues and the Pathology Services Manager to ensure the efficient running and ongoing development of the haematology service. He/she will be expected to participate in the health authority's system of governance, and audit and maintain their CME/CPD. He/she will also have a commitment to participate in the health authority's professional development. The appointee will be expected to observe the health authority's agreed policies and procedure, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the GHA. The consultant appointed will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and the running of his/her clinical department.

Teaching and Research

Undergraduate medical students from different countries come to Gibraltar for their electives. There is an active library facility with regular educational meetings planned throughout the academic year. The successful candidate will be encouraged to undertake research in their chosen field of expertise. Assist in continuing education of BMS staff, in conjunction with the department's CPD Officer and other hospital staff.

Audit and Clinical Governance

The successful candidate will be expected to take part in the organisation of audit activity in the department and take an active part in the continuing development of our Clinical Governance strategy. The appointee will be expected to participate in CPD activities and participate in appraisals and revalidation as required.

Qualifications

Essential: Applicants must hold full registration with the UK General Medical Council, with a license to practice. They should be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview if currently in a UK training programme.

Experience
