Principal Highways and Public Realm Design Engineer

Responsibilities

As a principal engineer in the Place & Movement team based in London or Guildford, you will manage projects and teams delivering urban highway, transport and public realm schemes, lead the resolution of complex technical issues, develop high‑quality designs from concept through detailed design, collaborate with other disciplines, manage client and stakeholder relationships, mentor junior staff, prepare bids for new commissions, support business development, attend sites for surveys, monitor works, ensure tasks meet timescales and budgets, keep up to date with design methods and standards, and uphold quality assurance procedures.

In addition, you will work toward professional qualifications and undertake training.

Requirements for the Role

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (other relevant subjects considered)
• Advanced degree or MBA is a plus

Essential Criteria

• Practical and technical knowledge in public realm design, cycle design, bus schemes, junction design, drainage design, Section 278 works, safety schemes, parking schemes, utility diversions, hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM), and understanding of TfL and other standards for public realm schemes.
• Experience in creating Bills of Quantities.
• Good knowledge of highway engineering construction methods, materials and specifications.
• Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, road sign design and road markings design.
• Excellent IT skills and use of Microsoft Office suite.
• Proven track record of winning work.
• Demonstrable capability to build and maintain client relationships.
• Ability to communicate technical information to non‑technical audiences.
• Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
• Positive, enthusiastic team player.
• Goal‑oriented, ambition to develop and deliver good service.
• Confidence to work effectively in a high‑energy, fast‑moving environment.
• Good organisational skills, ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure in a busy, demanding environment.
• Ability to manage team members and mentor.

Desirable Criteria

• A post‑graduate qualification in a transport‑related subject.
• Site supervision/management experience.
• Experience of using Open Roads.
