Apprenticeship Overview

This apprenticeship at G involves operating and adjusting conventional or CNC machines. Responsibilities include:

  • Applying risk assessment and hazard identification processes and procedures in the work area.
  • Monitoring, obtaining and checking stock and supplies, and completing stock returns.
  • Recording information (paper or electronic) such as energy usage, job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, manufacturers' documentation, asset management records, work sheets, checklists, waste environmental records and any legal reporting requirements.
  • Reading and interpreting information (e.g., data and documentation used to produce machined components).
  • Applying engineering, mathematical and scientific principles.
  • Planning and organising own work and resources.
  • Following and applying inspection and quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Choosing machining processes, selecting and setting up tooling and work holding devices.
  • Setting and adjusting machine operating parameters, including feeds and speeds for roughing and finishing operations, loading, proving and validating programs when using a CNC machine tool.
  • Applying machining operations and techniques to produce complex components with features such as parallel, stepped, angular diameters and faces, grooves, slots, recesses and undercuts, radii and chamfers, internal and external forms and profiles; executing reaming, boring, drilling and electro‑eroded holes; creating internal and external screw threads.
  • Measuring and checking components.
  • Checking condition of tools and equipment, identifying issues, resolving and taking action as needed.
  • Identifying and actioning issues in the manufacturing process.
  • Applying fault‑finding and diagnostic testing procedures to diagnose and resolve faults, escalating issues where necessary.
  • Maintaining the work area and returning resources and consumables.
  • Communicating verbally with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Following machine shut‑down, safe isolation, handover, start‑up or warm‑up procedures, escalating issues.
  • Applying continuous improvement techniques and devising suggestions for improvement.
  • Applying ethical principles and team working principles.
