The Bureau of Investigative Journalism is looking for a Climate and Environment Editor to lead its award-winning team investigating the governments, companies and people exacerbating the climate crisis.
Key responsibilities
- You will develop and deliver on a clear long-term strategy for agenda-setting investigations.
- You will work to the highest journalistic standards, manage the team’s budget and juggle the demands between the deeper investigations and quicker pieces that intersect with the news.
- You must also proactively support both fundraising and audience-building efforts.
- You will be running an experienced team who expect to by led with ambition, direction, excellent judgment, clear communication skills and a supportive approach.
- You will manage relationships with publishing partners, freelancers, experts, influencers and others who will help promote the journalism.
- You’ll also contribute to newsletters, panel discussions and social videos.
- You must have the right to live and work in the UK.
- 5+ years of experience in climate or environment accountability journalism, with a mastery of the beat and some major stories to prove it
- At least two years managing a team, with the ability to juggle and prioritise several projects, support and inspire reporters, advocate for their stories and hold them accountable against their targets
- A demonstrable passion for environment journalism, and a belief that climate reporting – be it exposing disinformation, fossil fuel funding, agriculture or the growing threat of AMR – can make a real difference
- A willingness to try new things, make confident decisions and take responsibility for them
- A range of both short- and long-term ideas for stories that are relevant to the public debate, will can get audiences hooked and have the potential for serious impact
- Readiness to engage with and win over audience members by interacting with them directly – by phone, email, on a stage or via social media – and to support the Bureau’s membership programme
- A track record in ensuring stories are fair and rigorously sourced, and that fact-check, right-of-reply and legal review processes are followed properly
- A good knowledge of English media law
- A commitment to considering and including diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of the role
- The traits of a true collaborator and communicator: sometimes leading, sometimes helping others achieve their goals, and always understanding that everyone should be treated with respect and empathy
