We are recruiting exclusively for a Transport Manager to join a highly successful, fast-growing bespoke manufacturing and engineering business based in Middlewich, Cheshire. The company designs and manufactures innovative, high-quality products and operates as a preferred supplier to several well-known brands. Continued year-on-year growth, combined with increasing UK and international demand, has driven significant investment across warehousing, logistics, and transport operations.
This hire follows the internal promotion of the existing Transport Manager into a Depot Manager role, creating an excellent opportunity for a Transport Manager to step into a well-run operation with a structured handover and training from someone who has successfully done the job. This is a key role within a data-driven, operationally focused business where transport performance, cost control, and service delivery are business-critical.
The Transport Manager Role
- Take full ownership of the company's transport and distribution function, managing both in-house drivers and subcontracted haulage.
- Manage and lead a team of 8 employed drivers, driving performance, engagement, and compliance.
- Plan and coordinate daily transport operations to ensure efficient, on-time delivery.
- Manage and coordinate subcontracted transport and haulage, sourcing cost-effective solutions while maintaining service levels.
- Control and reduce transport costs through effective planning, negotiation, and utilisation.
- Manage the movement of non-standard freight - varying shapes, sizes, and specifications (not repetitive palletised loads).
- Ensure full compliance with transport legislation, driver hours, health & safety, and company procedures.
- Work closely with the Warehouse & Depot Manager to align transport capacity with warehouse throughput.
- Monitor and report on key transport KPIs including OTIF (On Time In Full), vehicle utilisation, and subcontract spend.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across transport and logistics operations.
- Act as a key point of contact between drivers, warehouse teams, and senior management.
The Person
We are looking for an experienced Transport Manager / Logistics Manager with a strong operational and commercial mindset. You will ideally have:
- Proven experience as a Transport Manager, Logistics Manager, Fleet Manager, or similar.
- Experience managing drivers and transport operations within manufacturing, engineering, or complex logistics environments.
- Strong background coordinating and managing subcontracted haulage.
- Experience handling irregular, oversized, or non-standard freight, not just “rinse-and-repeat” loads.
- A commercial approach to cost control, transport planning, and supplier management.
- Confidence working with transport data, KPIs, and performance metrics.
- Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills, able to engage with both front-line drivers and senior stakeholders.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office / Excel.
Why Apply?
- Up to circa £50,000 salary + benefits.
- Clear handover and training from the outgoing Transport Manager.
- Join a growing, stable, and well-invested business.
- High-impact role with real influence over cost, service, and performance.
- Long-term opportunity within a company that promotes from within.
