Eastbourne Downs Golf Club is seeking an experienced, motivated, and forward-thinking Course Manager to lead the maintenance, presentation, and long-term development of the golf course and surrounding grounds. As part of the Get Golfing CIO group, this role combines high standards of course conditioning with a strong commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and team leadership.

The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of course maintenance, machinery management, health and safety compliance, environmental stewardship, and staff development, ensuring the course consistently delivers an exceptional playing experience for members, guests, and visitors.

Course Management

  • Lead the daily maintenance and presentation of the golf course, practice facilities, clubhouse grounds, and associated landscapes.
  • Develop and implement agronomic programmes including mowing, irrigation, aeration, top dressing, fertilisation, and pest/disease management.
  • Ensure year-round course conditioning aligns with the club’s standards and strategic objectives.
  • Monitor weather conditions and adjust maintenance schedules accordingly.
  • Manage bunker maintenance, drainage systems, pathways, and course furniture.

Team Leadership

  • Recruit, manage, motivate, and develop the greenkeeping team.
  • Prepare staff rotas and allocate daily tasks efficiently.
  • Conduct regular training, appraisals, and performance reviews.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and safety-focused working culture.

Machinery & Budget Management

  • Oversee servicing, maintenance, and replacement planning for all machinery and equipment.
  • Manage departmental budgets, purchasing, and stock control effectively.
  • Liaise with suppliers and contractors to ensure best value and service quality.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to maintenance operations and expenditure.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain COSHH records, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
  • Promote sustainable and environmentally responsible course management practices.
  • Ensure all team members are appropriately trained and certified.

Member & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with the General Manager, Golf Operations team, and club committees.
  • Communicate planned maintenance activities and course improvement projects clearly to members and guests.
  • Support club events, competitions, and corporate functions where required.
  • Contribute to the club’s reputation for hospitality, accessibility, and community engagement.

Candidate Profile

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in a senior greenkeeping or Course Manager position.
  • Strong knowledge of modern turf management and agronomy practices.
  • Experience managing and developing teams.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • PA1, PA2, and PA6 spraying certificates (or equivalent).
  • Sound understanding of health and safety legislation.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • NVQ Level 3 or higher in Sports Turf Management or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience working within multi-site golf operations.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and sustainable water management.
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Experience preparing and managing departmental budgets.
