Are you an experienced Technical Author with a passion for transforming complex engineering concepts into clear, accurate and user-friendly documentation?

We are seeking a Technical Author to support the development of advanced sonar, acoustic sensing and subsea technologies used across defence, marine and commercial sectors.

Working alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will play a key role in producing high-quality technical documentation that supports products throughout their entire lifecycle.

The Role

As Technical Author, you will be responsible for creating, maintaining and continuously improving technical documentation for sophisticated hardware and software systems.

You will work closely with systems, mechanical, electrical, electronics and software engineers to ensure documentation is technically accurate, compliant and delivered in line with product releases.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Producing user manuals, installation guides, maintenance manuals, service procedures and integration guides.
  • Developing technical bulletins, datasheets, application notes, quick reference guides and training materials.
  • Collaborating with engineering teams throughout product development to capture technical information.
  • Attending design reviews, product demonstrations and engineering workshops.
  • Ensuring documentation includes appropriate safety information, warnings and operational guidance.
  • Managing documentation under configuration control and maintaining revision accuracy alongside hardware and software releases.
  • Supporting the development of documentation templates, style guides and authoring standards.
  • Contributing to compliance with relevant quality, defence and product safety standards.

About You

You’ll ideally have

  • Experience producing technical documentation for complex engineering products.
  • Outstanding written communication skills.
  • The ability to understand mechanical, electrical, electronic and software systems.
  • Experience managing multiple documentation projects to demanding deadlines.
  • Strong Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Experience working within document control or configuration management processes.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • A degree, or equivalent experience, in Engineering, Technical Communication, Science or a related discipline.

Desirable Experience

  • Defence, marine, sonar, subsea or acoustic technologies.
  • Systems engineering and product development lifecycles.
  • Documentation management systems or Component Content Management Systems (CCMS).
  • Technical illustration, image editing or CAD visualisation tools.
  • Knowledge of BS EN 82079-1, ASD-STE100 (Simplified Technical English) or similar documentation standards.
  • Experience supporting CE, UKCA or defence compliance documentation.
  • Understanding of software version control and configuration management.
