Here Is What You Will Do
- Plans, organizes, and directs the operations of instructional science laboratories
- Develops, records, implements, and oversees work/lab policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work and learning environment in support of student learning objectives in coordination with the department chair and faculty.
- Trains, supervises, schedules, and evaluates the performance of assigned laboratory technicians, instructional assistants, and other assigned personnel
- Schedules personnel including student assistants to support the instructional science laboratory program
- Serves as resource person to instructors
- Works with appropriate Department chair/ Associate Department Chair in developing departmental budget needs
- Monitors and maintains budgets for assigned functions and activities, including specifying, ordering, receiving and issuing materials, parts, and supplies
- Monitors expenditures in accordance with policies and procedures
- Oversees the inventory of equipment and recommends laboratory equipment and supplies
- Maintains inventory of expendable supplies and orders supplies needed for the operation of multiple instructor’s science laboratories
- Oversees preparation of laboratory material and equipment for laboratory sessions and class demonstrations according to the instructions of the faculty
- Acquires, controls, safely stores, operates, maintains, and repairs large inventory of delicate, expensive laboratory equipment, and materials in assigned area, which may include hazardous materials.
- Acts as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for the science labs
- Ensures the security of assigned assets
- Maintains all appropriate state and federal permits and required annual reports
- Maintains current knowledge of and ensure compliance with federal and state regulatory, safety, and health standards and to ensure safe and legal acquisition, use, storage, and disposal of all chemicals and hazardous materials in science labs
- Teaches up to six classes per year as needed
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Master’s degree in the assigned research area, or a bachelor’s degree in the assigned research area and two years of related experience, or a combination of education and related experience.
Preferred Hiring Requirements
- Master’s degree in Physics/Astronomy preferred.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for the labs, as well as how to safely use them; safety regulations, procedures & practices; current software needed for instruction.
- Ability to lift or move equipment in the lab.
- Collegiate Physics/Astronomy teaching experience.
