We are looking for an enthusiastic and kind individual who genuinely enjoys the company of young people. You will also have an active interest in sport, and experience of either playing competitively or coaching one of our three key sports (rugby, netball and hockey) would be an advantage. A key part of the job is working with our teaching staff providing classroom support, mostly with our Geits (Primary 7 age) pupils who are based up at the Senior School. This will include PE and Games sessions. Your role will be to actively assist in the classroom, provide administrative support and help with the organisation of resources and activities. You will also work alongside our PE and Games staff in supporting with sports coaching to pupils of all ages. Our interns would normally be expected to help in coaching a sports team and so would therefore be part of our Saturday morning Games programme. This role is particularly suited to someone who might be interested in a career in teaching and there will be opportunities to provide bespoke experience relating to interest areas of the individual. The role is term time only and is for the 25/26 academic session, starting August 2026 and ending at the end of June 2027.
Main Responsibilities:
- Classroom Support: Assisting with Geits (P7) supervision during and between lessons, accompanying Geits during assemblies, games and trips (where needed), assisting with playground and lunchtime supervision, providing additional support at School events such as drama productions and sports days.
- Support for Learning: Providing classroom assistance for pupils where needed, working one-to-one or in small groups to support pupils with their School work, carrying out literacy sessions with small groups and feeding updates back to the Support for Learning department, liaising with the Support for Learning department to raise any issues or concerns, assisting with exams and revision planning, reading or scribing during exams and controlled assessments as required.
- PE & Games Coaching: Supporting the PE and Games programme at both the Junior and Senior Schools. Core School sports are: Rugby; Hockey; Netball; Cricket; Tennis; Athletics (Rugby, Hockey & Netball take place during the Autumn and Spring terms, with Cricket, Tennis and Athletics taking place during the summer term). You may also be asked to support with swimming, as well as our varied games programme.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Qualifications/Experience: Educated to a degree level (or working towards a degree) β E, proven experience of working in a team - E, experience of working with children (including voluntary positions)- D, played or competed at sport at school or university β E, experience of one of our key sports (rugby, netball or hockey) - D, some experience of sports coaching - D, ability to take initiative - E, administrative experience βD.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Practical, conscientious and reliable - E, excellent interpersonal skills - E, self-motivated with the ability to work under own initiative β E, excellent oral and written communication skills - E, good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) β E.
- Other Attributes: A willingness to undertake a large variety of tasks as and when required β E. The ability to form good relationships and connections with the pupils is one of the most important parts of the job. Patience and empathy are key attributes needed in the support for learning aspect of the role.
The Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
