We are looking for an Experienced Obstetric Scrub Practitioner for a fixed term contract of 9 months. You will be working as part of a friendly, welcoming and expert multidisciplinary Theatre Team. Our focus at all times is on ensuring that our patients receive high quality care in clean and comfortable surroundings.
Main duties of the job:
- Strive for the continuous improvements in the delivery of high-quality patient focused care.
- Assist in the provision of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of patients in the perioperative environment.
- Being sensitive to our patients and staff needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy and always ensuring a friendly environment.
- As skills develop, manage the Theatre area in the absence of the Team Leaders, maintain safe staffing levels, ensuring that policies are always adhered to and the Senior Theatre team remain updated.
- Assist the Professional Development Team in the management of preceptorship of newly qualified staff, return to practice staff and the mentorship of Nursing /ODP students and theatre support workers.
- Show a willingness to learn new skills for own Professional Development.

Job responsibilities:
- Maintaining a safe and clean environment within the clinical area in accordance with the Trust's policies and guidelines.
- Deliver a high standard of perioperative care based upon a sound evidence base.
- Provide skilled clinical assistance to the surgical, anaesthetic and recovery teams.
- Maintaining timely and accurate patient care documentation, ensuring that confidentiality is respected.
- Creates and utilises opportunities to promote health and wellbeing of patients in our care.
- Communicating with and assisting the multidisciplinary team to always promote excellence in the delivery of patient care.
- Leads a perioperative team to manage a group of patients throughout a shift.
- Working within the NMC/HCPC Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising one's own abilities and limitations.
- To ensure 24-hour cover, working rotational shifts to include earlies, lates, nights, weekends, and Bank Holidays.
Managerial:
- Ensure that adequate resources are available to meet the needs of the patients and contribute to cost improvement programmes.
- Contribute to the maintenance of appropriate stock levels and have an awareness of materials management.
- Ensure that all equipment for patient use is kept in good working order in line with current Regulations.
- Ensure that adequate skill mix is available to meet the needs of the patients.
- Ensure that concerns and complaints from patients, visitors or colleagues are resolved where possible and reported to the Team Leader / Senior Team Leader.
- Deputise for the Team Leader, as and when necessary.
Educational and Training:
- Have a positive attitude to continuing professional development to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for safe and effective preoperative practice.
- Participate in Trust Appraisal System.
- Possess a clear understanding of Clinical Governance in relation to standards of care, support of colleagues and audit of given care.
- Participate in the utilisation, evaluation and conduct of audit and research.
- Contribute to and evaluate the implementation of new ideas and innovations within the Theatre areas.
- Promote a professional image by acting as a role model to others, provide and participate in clinical supervision.
- Contribute to preceptoring, mentoring and assessing of colleagues and students in placement.
Professional:
- Ensures that the Team Leader/Senior Team Leader is informed of any Professional concerns at the earliest opportunity.
- Ensure that Revalidation requirements for NMC/HCPC Registration are adhered.
- Ensures current registration with NMC/HCPC.
- To act as an ambassador for the clinical environment promoting a professional image of a Theatre Practitioner role.
Human Resources:
- Assist senior colleagues with duty rostering.
- Having an awareness of skill mix and its appropriateness in maintaining service.
Special Requirements:
- Provide on-call/stand-by cover as necessitated by departmental needs.
- During night duty, may be required to call in a second team.
- Pre-check the operating lists (all specialties competent in), to ensure that any special prosthesis required have been ordered.
- Be able to cannulate and administer intravenous drugs.
- Be able to catheterise patients.
Person Specification:
- Significant Experience Scrub Practitioner within Obstetrics.
- Strong knowledge of obstetric instrumentation and surgical techniques.
- Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and maintain safe, efficient surgical site.
- Excellent understanding of Infection Control, patient safety and perioperative standards.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Registered General Nurse and / or Registered Operating Department Practitioner.
- Recovery experience.
- Provide and receive complex and sensitive information, understanding the barriers to effective communication.
- Ability to have positive working relationships.
- Able to demonstrate clinical knowledge, skills and expertise.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet demand.
