The Role

We are looking for a Materials Laboratory Technician to manage and oversee the day‑to‑day activities of our Materials Testing Laboratory. Working closely with the Quality, Operations and Procurement teams, you will play a key role in ensuring the quality and compliance of incoming raw materials before they are released into production. The role will also support the evaluation, development and approval of new materials, contributing to ongoing product and process improvements across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day‑to‑day operation of the Materials Testing Laboratory at BHL, with a particular focus on recycled PVC and PP materials.
  • Carry out Batch Release Testing (BRT) and Process Verification Testing (PVT) on incoming raw materials in line with relevant standards, quality plans and procedures.
  • Interpret, analyse and communicate test results to key stakeholders, helping to improve understanding and knowledge across the business.
  • Support New Product Development and process improvement projects within the Moulding and Extrusion departments.
  • Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures, test methods, quality plans and applicable industry standards.
  • Complete and maintain accurate test sheets, reports and measurement records.
  • Participate in third‑party audits and support audit preparation activities.
  • Promptly identify and communicate material failures or non‑conformances.
  • Develop, implement and maintain laboratory test procedures.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, including calibration and routine servicing requirements.
  • Complete all mandatory training requirements.
  • Ensure all activities are carried out in accordance with company Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures.
  • Follow safe systems of work and take responsibility for your own health and safety, as well as that of colleagues and others affected by your actions.
  • Comply with all relevant company policies, including the Driver Handbook and Substance Misuse Policy where applicable.

Skills & Experience

  • Degree qualified in Polymer Science, Materials Science or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of recycled polymer grades, particularly PVC and PP, would be advantageous.
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory environment is desirable.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Good IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Self‑motivated, proactive and results‑focused.
  • Positive and flexible approach to work.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • A continuous improvement mindset with a passion for enhancing products and processes.
