The Opportunity
We’re seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our Engineering teams in London. This is a hands-on, technical role suited for someone passionate about delivering quality at scale, building reliable test automation, and driving best practices across the SDLC.
As a Senior SDET, you’ll work on enterprise-level platforms in the Utilities space, helping shape our testing strategy, enhance CI/CD pipelines, and deliver robust solutions with speed and precision.
Key Responsibilities
- Automation Ownership & Framework Evolution: Take full ownership of the existing Playwright + .NET/C# automation framework, enhancing, refining, and extending it to increase coverage and reliability. Continue building out reusable components, selectors, and abstractions tailored for Blazor applications, ensuring long-term maintainability. Expand the current automation suite across critical user journeys, regression flows, and integration scenarios. Drive best practices in UI automation, ensuring consistent patterns, test stability, and efficient execution.
- Quality Engineering & Shift-Left Enablement: Partner closely with engineers, TTLs, and Product to embed quality earlier in the SDLC and ensure testability is considered during design and development. Advocate for high-quality engineering standards, including accessibility, ARIA-based selectors, semantic locators, and solid test evidence. Strengthen the shift-left approach by enabling developers to contribute to automated tests and adopt modern testing techniques.
- CI/CD Integration & Engineering Enablement: Integrate, optimise, and maintain automated tests within CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins), ensuring fast feedback and reliable builds. Improve reporting, parallel execution, and pipeline efficiency to support large-scale automated testing. Collaborate with teams to resolve automation-related environment issues and ensure smooth execution across development and release cycles.
- Cross-team Collaboration & Quality Leadership: Work with cross-functional teams across UK & India to improve quality practices, strengthen engineering discipline, and raise automation maturity. Support defect triage, root cause analysis, and the definition of quality measures. Mentor and upskill engineers in automation, quality mindset, and modern testing tools.
What You’ll Bring
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in test automation with strong proficiency in C#/.NET and solid understanding of object-oriented programming.
- Practical experience with Playwright, or equivalent modern UI automation frameworks, with the ability to quickly adapt to our existing Playwright/.NET stack.
- Proven ability to extend, enhance, and scale an existing automation framework, improving reliability, coverage, structure, and maintainability over time.
- Strong understanding of Blazor-based web applications, including component-level testing, DOM behaviour, async patterns, and working with semantic or ARIA-based locators.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins), optimising execution and reporting.
- Strong understanding of UI, API, and integration testing approaches, with the ability to choose the right tools and techniques for the problem.
- Solid SQL/database skills and familiarity with enterprise-level testing.
- Experience influencing engineers and teams to adopt quality-first, automation-led ways of working.
- Ability to mentor and uplift engineers in automation practices, improving engineering excellence across teams.
- Working knowledge of test management tools: JIRA, Zephyr, TestRail.
Key Personal Attributes
- High energy, initiative, and ownership, especially important as automation is in its early stages.
- Ability to influence and bring teams along on the automation journey.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and a consultative approach to quality.
- Thrives in fast-paced, evolving Agile environments.
- Passionate about improvement, innovation, and raising engineering standards.
