Genomics England partners with the NHS to provide whole genome sequencing diagnostics. We also equip researchers to find the causes of disease and develop new treatments – with patients and participants at the heart of it all. Our mission is to continue refining, scaling, and evolving our ability to enable others to deliver genomic healthcare and conduct genomic research. We are accelerating our impact and working with patients, doctors, scientists, government and industry to improve genomic testing, and help researchers access the health data and technology they need to make new medical discoveries and create more effective, targeted medicines for everybody.

We are seeking a talented Scientific Manager based on a 12 month fixed term contract, to join our dynamic team, working directly under the Research Management Lead. You will work with world leading key opinion leaders in cancer, rare disease and associated functional researchers, who make up the collected from the 100,000 Genomes Project, the NHS Genomic Medicine Service and beyond. This is a unique opportunity to work with leading scientists to advance research from foundational science to real-world applications that benefit patients. You will support and connect members of the Research Network, helping them identify new research directions and collaboration opportunities. Your role will involve driving engagement, maximizing scientific output, and aligning research efforts with Genomics England's strategic goals.

Everyday responsibilities include:

  • Driving engagement with the Research Network and acting as the primary liaison for academic and clinical researchers, facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing to maximize the scientific output and impact of our research communities.
  • Helping researchers to maximize their scientific output, quality and value that they derive from the data in the National Genomic Research Library, to provide strategic direction, and contribute subject matter expertise to shape and advance key research initiatives, ensuring they align with the network's goals and the broader scientific community's needs.
  • Driving discovery research and the strategic integration of Genomics England's research programs with the Research Network, particularly focusing on the Generation Study.
  • Overseeing membership management systems and ensure research policies and governance are followed and maintained.
  • Working with researchers and relevant colleagues at Genomics England to facilitate clinical interactions through appropriate mechanisms.

Skills and experience for success:

  • Direct experience of developing and managing effective relationships with external researchers, and demonstrable experience of undertaking scientific research in an academic or commercial setting, or a proven track record of contributing to large-scale research projects, with specific expertise in screening, predisposition and population-based cohort programmes being a significant plus.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, capable of working effectively across diverse teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Experience developing and managing effective relationships with and within scientific teams, communities or networks, with a keen understanding of research collaboration tools and platforms.
  • Ideally, a working knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics or another Customer Relationship Management software and an understanding of enabling research through data and data access processes.
  • Be highly motivated, with the ability to work with multiple research projects or groups, manage workloads, perform self-directed working, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to identify potential problems and opportunities to manage and resolve them effectively.
  • The ability to see the bigger picture and manage expectations and competing demands in a complex, fast-paced environment.

Qualifications:

  • Life science (or a genetics-related field) post graduate degree with experience of a post-graduate research environment or a medical degree with experience of clinical research, or equivalent experience.

Blended working model:

Genomics England operates a blended working model as we know our people appreciate the flexibility that hybrid working can bring. We expect most people to come into the office a minimum of 2 times each month. However, this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. There is no expectation that people will return to the office full time unless they want to, however, some of our roles require full time on site attendance e.g., lab teams, reception team.

Our teams and squads have, and will continue to reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit, beyond the minimum. Our office locations are: Canary Wharf, Cambridge and Leeds.
