Genomics England is a global leader in enabling genomic medicine and research, focused on creating a world where everyone benefits from genomic healthcare. Building on the 100,000 Genomes Project, we support the NHS’s world-first national whole genome sequencing service and run the growing National Genomic Research Library, alongside delivering numerous major genomics initiatives. By connecting research and clinical care at national scale, we enable immediate healthcare benefits and advances for the future.
Our mission is to provide the evidence and digital systems so that by 2035 genomics could play a role in up to half of all healthcare interactions, whilst securing the UK’s position as the best place to discover, prove and benefit from genomic innovations. We are accelerating our impact and working with patients, doctors, scientists, government and industry to improve genomic testing, and help researchers access the health data and technology they need to make new medical discoveries and create more effective, targeted medicines for everybody.
Behind the Healthcare and Research outcomes, Genomics England delivers through designing, developing and operating complex healthcare software systems. We're on the cusp of big changes with the real prospect of genomics becoming the fabric of everyday healthcare through the lifetime – from birth to old age.
Genomics England is looking for a Senior Technical Product Manager to join the Use Research Data service, working within the Research Environment Platform squad. The Use Research Data service is how approved researchers around the world access the National Genomic Research Library. Our job is to make that access secure, reliable, and as straightforward as it can be, so that researchers can convert data into insights and, in time, into new treatments, new tests, and new diagnoses for patients.
The Research Environment Platform squad is responsible for the products that make that access possible: the workspaces and virtual desktop infrastructure that researchers work in, and the identity and access management that governs who can do what within the service. Most of these products are backend and technical in nature. The decisions made about them quietly impacts on the experience of every researcher using our data.
Everyday responsibilities include:
- Owning the strategy, roadmap, and outcomes for the squad’s products, workspaces, virtual desktop infrastructure, and identity and access management.
- Co-producing the roadmap with the squad’s technical lead. You bring the product framing and the business context; they bring the technical sequencing and feasibility. The roadmap is genuinely the product of both.
- Working closely with engineers on scope, sequencing, and architectural trade-offs, and being honest with them when something is becoming more complex or more expensive than the problem warrants.
- Contributing to leadership conversations about what your squad’s products should be optimising for in a given period, cost, scale, reliability, time-to-value and then owning that direction with your squad once it has been agreed.
- Making the calls on what to build, what to buy, what to retire, and what to leave alone for now.
- Working carefully inside a regulated environment, with the seriousness that compliance, audit, and assurance deserve in a service handling data of this kind.
- Supporting more junior product managers and contributing to how product is practised at Genomics England.
Skills and experience for success:
- You have product-managed cloud-based backend products through their full lifecycle, including discovery, build, scaling, and decisions about retirement or replacement.
- Experience owning more than one product at once, or owning a portfolio within a squad, would be relevant.
- Experience with platform products, identity systems, or research or scientific computing environments would all be relevant too.
- You have genuine technical fluency, earned by whatever route. What matters is that engineers find you a credible thinking partner.
- You have co-owned a roadmap with a technical lead before, and you can talk honestly about how you handled the points where the product view and the engineering view did not line up.
- You are comfortable working closely with experienced engineers, and you can hold a position on scope and pragmatism when you need to, without losing the relationship.
- You have product judgement about what your portfolio should be optimising for, and you are willing to be a substantive voice in conversations about direction rather than waiting to be told.
- You communicate clearly and openly with your manager and your squad about progress, trade-offs, and risk.
- Genomics or healthcare experience is welcome but not required. We care more about the depth of your product thinking than the specific domain you have worked in.
Why this role:
Genomics England holds one of the world’s most comprehensive rare disease and cancer genomic datasets, and the research community is how that data becomes the insight that eventually changes clinical practice. The Use Research Data service exists to accelerate that work, and the products in the Research Environment Platform squad are most of what makes secure, trusted access to our data possible. The work is largely invisible to the people who benefit from it, which is part of why it matters that the people doing it care about getting it right.
If that sounds like the kind of work you want to do, we would like to hear from you.
Qualifications
While your qualifications are certainly important and provide a foundation, we are particularly interested in understanding the breadth and depth of your overall experience, as this gives us a clearer picture of what you can bring to the role.
