As a Senior Product Designer at Genomics England, you will bring cutting-edge new genomics products to life. You will take the lead on the design of products from end-to-end and help to establish first class design standards. This is a core role in our organisation and will consist of designing innovative, intuitive products and collaborating with Product Managers and Engineers to define and realise the product vision and roadmap. You will develop a deep understanding of user needs working with User Research and combine this with business objectives and domain knowledge derived from subject matter experts to ideate, build and iterate products.

Everyday responsibilities include:

  • Get to know the Services: What they are, how they work, and how they could transform research and healthcare. You’ll also get to know our users and their needs.
  • Design the Products: You’ll work as part of a cross-functional squad including engineering, research, product management and subject matter experts to iterate designs, ensuring usability, feasibility and viability to deliver quality outcomes.
  • Problem solving: You'll be designing interactions and product experiences surrounding complex data, delivering well-crafted designs rooted in user needs in line with relevant design standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Input into the product vision: You will work closely with the Product Manager to translate qualitative and quantitative insights into a product roadmap to deliver user value.
  • Champion accessibility: You’ll design accessible experiences with a content designer to ensure everyone can access and use the product.
  • Apply frameworks: You'll have knowledge and experience of applying NHS design systems and frameworks and utilise these in your design.
  • Contribute to the wider design community: Collaborate with other designers to share design patterns and best practice and shape our design ways of working, collectively improving delivery of design quality.
  • Facilitate decision making and co-creation: Bring together diverse perspectives, including the product squad, internal and external stakeholders and users, through appropriate methods to solve problems together.

Essential skills:

  • Substantial experience as a Senior Product Designer with examples of live delivery.
  • Experience working as part of a cross functional product squad.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of product design processes and methodologies.
  • Able to work end-to-end, from discovery to launch, and beyond.
  • Understanding of how to evaluate and interpret user research findings to wireframe and prototype solutions.
  • Knowledge of the WCAG 2.2 accessibility guidelines and ability to work with engineers to implement.
  • Proactive collaborator who embraces working with a diverse range of people such as designers, engineers, product managers, and researchers.
  • Strong organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Desire to continually improve work through giving and receiving feedback.
  • Advanced proficiency with design and prototyping tools including Figma and Miro.
  • Experience using NHS design systems and applying regulatory best practice desirable.
  • Advanced storytelling skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex problems, decisions, and outcomes to diverse audiences, influencing understanding and alignment across multidisciplinary and senior teams.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience working under Government Digital Service Standard.
  • Experience of front-end engineering, and an ability to work with architects to ensure solutions we design are feasible.
  • Comfortable and effective when working with ambiguity and able to support others to navigate uncertainty and find focus to deliver value.
  • Experienced in creating patterns and defining boundaries for other areas to adopt.
  • Strong influence and experience building and navigating relationships to ensure collaboration and adoption of best practice in other areas of the organisation.
  • Strong understanding of engineering constraints and feasibility considerations with experience of working collaboratively with technical colleagues.
  • Experienced balancing tactical delivery with supporting overarching and long-term product strategy to ensure scalability and sustainability of solutions.
  • Experience working confidently within highly regulated, risk-sensitive contexts.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to ethical, compliance, and regulatory considerations when designing and delivering products with sensitive data.

Genomics England operates a blended working model as we know our people appreciate the flexibility that hybrid working can bring. There is no expectation that people will return to the office full time unless they want to, however, some of our roles require full time on site attendance e.g., lab teams, reception team.
