Building on the 100,000 Genomes Project, we support the NHS’s world-first national whole genome sequencing service and run the growing National Genomic Research Library, alongside delivering numerous major genomics initiatives. By connecting research and clinical care at national scale, we enable immediate healthcare benefits and advances for the future. Our mission is to provide the evidence and digital systems so that by 2035 genomics could play a role in up to half of all healthcare interactions, whilst securing the UK’s position as the best place to discover, prove and benefit from genomic innovations.

We are looking for an experienced Security Architect to join us here at Genomics England, and help shape the security architecture that protects sensitive genomic data at national scale. Within this role you'll be supporting the Head of Information Security to deliver the Cyber Security Strategy and Roadmap. You will be our lead technical security engineering and architecture resource for both cyber security projects and BAU activities, including managing the security solutions Genomics England uses to protect data and services.

Your career to date will have seen you gain strong experience of working in the cyber security space with expertise in security technologies such as NGFW, SIEM, vulnerability scanners and incident response tools.

Key Accountabilities
  • Act as the technical lead on Information Security for Genomics England
  • Design, develop and implement security solutions to reduce cyber risk in line with the risk management framework
  • Own and evolve the existing Cyber Security solutions used across Genomics England
  • Respond quickly and efficiently to security incidents when required
Skills

You will have experience in the following:

  • Strong technical experience related to cybersecurity, preferably in a hybrid environment (AWS and on-prem)
  • Experience of deploying and supporting security solutions such as NGFW, NGAV, SIEM, UEBA, vulnerability scanners and patch management
  • Exposure to an environment with changing priorities or circumstances, and the ability to prioritise and balance competing demands
  • Good planning and organisation skills
  • Ability to clearly document processes and procedures for others to understand
  • Experience of vulnerability and patch management
  • Experience designing and securing cloud architectures
  • Experience with Ansible, SALT, Terraform and development tools such as GitLab, Confluence and Jira in a DevOps environment
  • Experience in Linux (NB the environment is predominantly Linux)
  • Experience delivering security solutions in a containerised environment
  • CISM or CISSP certification
  • Knowledge and understanding of Cyber Essentials Plus, ISO27001 and/or the NIST Security Framework
  • Degree in computer science or software engineering or equivalent experience

This is a hands‑on Security Architect role where you will use your experience and expertise to shape how security is designed, built and operated across a high trust, data driven environment, with real impact on protecting genomic data at national scale. There are no mandatory qualifications or membership requirements for this role, however any security certifications would be highly desirable.
