We are a leading Genetic Testing organisation seeking an experienced Laboratory Supervisor (Biomedical Scientist) to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis in our Hammersmith Laboratory, London. This is an excellent opportunity to join a rapidly growing BioTech company and to share in our success as we grow.
You will be responsible for carrying out patient testing and reporting within the London laboratory alongside the supervision of existing staff to provide comprehensive, modern, high quality Clinical Genetics services to both private and NHS patients. In addition, the post holder will support the Quality Management System and processes and support in maintaining existing accreditation under ISO 15189 and certification under ISO 13485, in addition to undertaking the scientific duties and responsibilities of a Lab supervisor/ Biomedical Scientist.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- To provide Laboratory testing and interpretation of the results from highly complex diagnostic techniques (NGS/QPCR) that contribute to patient diagnostics and management.
- To follow established procedures and protocols.
- To undertake an appropriate proportion of the total workload of the department and other duties appropriate to the grade of the post and within appropriate time limits and TATs.
- To prepare and maintain reagents, logs and ordering systems and to participate in the general care of equipment.
- To maintain an accurate record of the work undertaken, including both manual and computerised records.
- Maintain and develop appropriate competency and expertise in scientific and technical areas.
- To manage staff in running the genetic diagnostic service.
- To conduct data analysis, ensuring the validity and reliability of data at all times.
- To participate in meetings as required.
- To be competent in the writing, implementation and closure of SOPs/NCRs/CAPA and Change Controls as well as supporting the corporate and Laboratory QMS.
- To ensure laboratory compliance for both testing and equipment regulations and requirements.
- To ensure technical standards are maintained through internal and external QA schemes in accordance with ISO 15189:2022 standards for accreditation.
- Support in preparation and carrying out of regular UKAS/BSI audits.
- Participate in research and development projects as required.
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post as directed by line manager.
Essential Skills:
- BSc in Biomedical Science degree or equivalent.
- MSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent post graduate qualification/experience.
- Several years’ experience providing diagnostic DNA sequencing laboratory services (Ideally in a commercial Laboratory).
- Good knowledge of Medical laboratories Requirements (ISO 15189).
- Core molecular biology techniques relating to DNA studies.
- Great communication skills and leadership qualities to empower the team in a complex and busy department – proven managerial experience.
- The ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of staff.
- Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Effective analytical, decision-making and problem-solving capability.

Desirable Skills:
- An understanding of genome annotation and the use of web-based browsers to interrogate genomic information.
- Knowledge of the genetic basis of human disease.
- Membership of a professional body, e.g. Association of Clinical Biochemists or Clinical Genetics Society.
- Study on a management course or working towards a recognised management qualification.
- Good knowledge of UK, ISO and EU regulations for In-Vitro Diagnostics Devices, Medical Devices, and healthcare; in particular ISO 13485 and FDA 21CFR Part 820.
- State registration with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist.
Experience:
- Have knowledge of departmental IT systems, EQMS, LIMs and appropriate automated software packages.
- Minimum of 5yrs Lab Based Experience Required in the following: DNA Extraction (Blood/Saliva/Buccal), Library Preparation, NGS and qPCR.
- Good level of understanding in relation to Quality and Regulatory policies and procedures required in a lab setting.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills. Personable and able to communicate with staff of all levels. Able to work cross-functionally.
- Work effectively, independently and under supervision, being able to adapt to fast pace rapidly changing environment.
- Flexible approach to work and the tasks to be undertaken.
- Able to work on a broad range of tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to demonstrate high organisational skills, and with good attention to detail.
- Must demonstrate sound judgment, analytical skills to enable assessment of risk.
- Investigational and problem-solving skills – root cause analysis.
- Create and maintain a high-quality image of the company in front of different stakeholders.
- Fluent in English (oral and written) main language used within the company for internal communications and QMS documents.
The Role:
- Up to £45,000 Basic Salary (Neg based upon experience).
- 25 Days Holiday + Statutory days.
