Senior Agentic Engineer

Senior Agentic Engineer

Full-Time No working from home possible
Genie AI

We’re looking for an exceptional systems thinker who believes AI has fundamentally changed how software should be built.

We are building an AI-first engineering organisation where engineers increasingly design systems, orchestrate agents and build the tools that build the features, rather than writing most code by hand.

This isn't about being good at Cursor or Claude Code.

We’re looking for a deeply experienced, hands‑on engineer who has fundamentally redesigned the way they build because of AI: someone who thinks from first principles, designs excellent systems, creates their own agents and tooling, and can take an ambiguous problem from zero → architecture → build → production.

You’ll help us move faster, but more importantly, you'll increase the capability of the engineering team.

You won't simply execute our roadmap.

We expect you to challenge it.

Your purpose in our mission

We’ve raised $17.8 million in Series A funding led by Google Ventures and joined by Khosla Ventures. They believe in our vision that the law should be accessible to everyone, and this is where your skills come in.

We're hiring this person because we need another exceptional technical IC who can help us increase engineering velocity while challenging how and what we build.

The core problem we're tackling is AI Agentic Workflows.

We're looking for someone who:

  • Is an exceptional systems thinker
  • Solves difficult problems from first principles
  • Designs excellent technical systems before reaching for implementation
  • Uses AI creatively to multiply their own and the team's productivity
  • Builds agents, subagents, tooling and automation, not simply uses them
  • Thinks in backcasting: starting from the desired outcome and working backwards
  • Has a strong cut strategy: simplifying architecture and identifying the shortest sensible route to an outcome
  • Moves with urgency and cares deeply about momentum
  • Is an exceptional hands‑on IC who can own work end‑to‑end
  • Challenges assumptions and proactively identifies opportunities that aren't already on the roadmap
  • Can explain highly complicated technical ideas in remarkably simple language
  • Is curious, open‑minded and constantly experimenting

This is a capability hire, not a capacity hire. We're looking for someone who raises the technical bar of the team.

This is what you’ll be doing

Your purpose is to increase Genie's engineering capability and speed through exceptional systems thinking and agentic leverage.

You won't just ship features.

You'll shape how we build products in the age of AI.

Design exceptional systems from first principles:

You’ll own technical design for complex problems, identifying technical risks, designing happy paths and edge cases, considering security, and breaking architecture into sensible milestones rather than producing huge theoretical design documents.

Build the machine that builds the feature:

A conventional engineer might start by asking: “What already exists in the codebase that I can use to build this?”. We want you to also ask: “What tool could I build that would help build this for me?”. You'll create agents, subagents, software and workflows that allow AI to take on significantly more of the implementation process.

Own products end‑to‑end:

You’ll take ambiguous problems from: problem → discovery → technical design → architecture → implementation → verification → production. We care much less about whether you call yourself a frontend or backend engineer than whether you can understand the whole system and design it exceptionally well.

Orchestrate AI, don't just use it:

You’ll design, build and maintain agentic workflows that create genuine engineering leverage.

Create 10× team leverage:

The goal isn't simply to make yourself faster. You'll build systems and tools that increase the output of the people around you too. sharing knowledge, improving workflows and designing for collective intelligence.

Challenge our roadmap:

We don't want an engineer who waits for a PM to tell them what to build. Within 6–12 months, an exceptional person in this role will be identifying new ideas, technical opportunities and problems that the rest of us haven't even thought to put on the roadmap yet. You'll influence both engineering and product discovery.

This is how we’ll set you up for success and the outcomes we expect from you

We're a startup in an exceptionally dynamic stage of growth.

The problems we're solving today may look very different in six months. We'll give you context, access and support, but we expect you to create clarity rather than wait for detailed instructions.

By the end of your first month we would like you to:

  • Understand Genie's engineering and product-development workflow
  • Get deeply familiar with our agentic engineering approach
  • Understand how we prioritise speed improvements and legal‑quality improvements
  • Begin contributing to our agentic tooling and workflows

By 90 days

We expect you to:

  • Be fluent in our development workflow and priorities
  • Independently identify when and where speed or legal‑quality improvements should be made
  • Own meaningful work end‑to‑end
  • Build/improve agentic tooling and workflows
  • Begin proactively contributing to product and technical direction

By 6–12 months

  • Independently design and ship sophisticated AI-native systems
  • Lead technical decisions within your area
  • Create significant engineering leverage through agents and tooling
  • Increase the team's delivery velocity
  • Proactively challenge and improve the roadmap
  • Identify valuable opportunities that weren't obvious to the existing team

We’ll continually develop and measure success on the below criteria:

Systems & technical design quality: Can you understand complicated systems, identify the real problem and design elegant solutions from first principles?

Agentic effectiveness: Are your agents, tools and workflows genuinely multiplying output, or are you simply using AI coding assistants?

Engineering leverage: Are you building things that make the entire team more capable?

Delivery & momentum: Are valuable things getting into production significantly faster because you're here?

Product contribution: Are you identifying valuable problems and opportunities rather than simply implementing an existing roadmap?

We are a start up in an exceptionally dynamic stage of our growth. We are a customer and employee led organisation. What this means is that we adapt to our customers' needs, and the problems we’re solving today could be very different in six months, or even by the end of this recruitment process. We also listen to our team as we empower you to have full autonomy of your role - you're the expert. You should expect to work with us on how your role develops, grows and changes throughout your time at Genie.

It can be tough here because

  • We move very fast
  • Problems change quickly
  • There are few precedents for this kind of engineering
  • You won't always receive detailed specifications
  • You'll need to create clarity from ambiguity
  • We expect engineers to think about what should be built, not simply how to build it
  • Our engineering practices are evolving rapidly as AI capabilities change
  • You'll be expected to challenge established thinking, including ours

But we think you’ll love

  • Working at a truly AI‑
