As our Legal Engineer, you’ll sit at the intersection of law and technology, helping translate legal expertise into AI-powered tools used by thousands of companies. You’ll play a key role in ensuring our AI agents produce accurate, reliable and commercially useful legal outputs. Your legal insights will directly influence the design, training and evaluation of AI systems powering Genie.
Your purpose in our mission: We’ve raised $17.8 million in Series A funding led by Google Ventures and joined by Khosla Ventures. They believe in our vision that the law should be accessible to everyone, and this is where your skills will help ensure our AI systems produce legal outputs that are precise, reliable and aligned with real-world legal practice.
Your manager and team: Our org structure is made up of pods with distinct areas of focus to keep us all working on the most impactful things for our customers all of the time. Some of our team members work across multiple pods. Our structure was conceived with impact, autonomy and velocity in mind and we’d love to share more with you throughout our interview process. Your manager, Nitish Mutha, our Co‑Founder & CTO will develop your skills and enable you to deliver on the pod mission.
This is what you’ll be doing: As a Legal Engineer at Genie AI you’ll be joining us in a dynamic stage of our growth so you’ll face lots of different challenges. Doing legal engineering for an AI product is a fascinating challenge, so be prepared to adapt your skillset! Below is what we need you to do, it’s up to you on how:
- AI evaluation and benchmarking: Evaluate the quality and reliability of our AI agents’ legal outputs. You’ll initially conduct hands‑on legal evaluations, while working toward building scalable automated evaluation systems using LLM‑as‑a‑judge techniques.
- Developing legally intelligent AI agents: Help improve our AI agents by encoding specialised legal knowledge and strong legal drafting practices into their behaviour.
- Testing and iterating on AI systems: Work closely with researchers and engineers to test AI features, provide legal feedback, and iterate on solutions to improve performance and reliability.
- Evaluation insights and reporting: Analyse evaluation results and produce clear insights and reports that guide improvements to our AI models and product.
- Leading the LegalBench community benchmark: Lead the development of our community‑led LegalBench benchmarking initiative, helping design evaluation tasks, build a roadmap, and coordinate work with the wider legal and AI community.
This is how we’ll set you up for success and the outcomes we expect from you: Over your first 90 days we can talk you through a high level overview of your 90‑day plan. By the end of your first six months we expect you to be:
- Designing and running evaluations of AI‑generated legal outputs.
- Contributing legal insight to machine learning feature design.
- Producing actionable reports that guide improvements to our AI Agents.
We’ll continually develop and measure success on the below criteria:
- The quality of legal expertise and feedback you provide to the AI engineering team.
- Your ability to design efficient and reliable evaluation processes for legal AI.
- The clarity and impact of insights you generate from evaluation research.
