The Role
As a Principal Outpatient Nurse with us, you\’ll lead and manage high-quality, patient-centred care across all nursing outpatient services, including direct oversight of Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs). You will champion clinical and operational excellence in cancer care, provide visible leadership, and work with multidisciplinary teams to support service delivery, patient safety, and strategic development across the network. This role involves national travel and a minimum of 2–3 days per week in GenesisCare centres across the network.
What You’ll Do
Your key responsibilities:
- Provide professional and operational leadership for all staff within outpatient services.
- Lead the professional development of Oncology/Haematology CNSs and Outpatient Nurses, ensuring effective role utilisation and high standards of practice.
- Develop e-learning modules, deliver education workshops, and manage competency frameworks and compliance for outpatient nurses and CNSs.
- Develop and manage patient information in collaboration with Clinical Reference Groups and Clinical Advisors.
- Ensure robust clinical governance processes, including audits, risk management, incident reviews, and action plans.
- Maintain clinical governance documents in line with relevant guidelines, regulations, and standards.
- Chair and lead the National Outpatient Lead Nurse forum and CNS forums to promote best practice, improvement, compliance, and outstanding care.
- Collaborate with finance and clinical solutions to ensure outpatient procedure codes are accurate and outpatient activity is captured.
- Collaborate with purchasing to ensure consumables for outpatient services comply with regulatory standards, are cost effective, and available to order.
- Collaborate with the service development team to develop and launch new outpatient services in line with clinical governance standards.
- Collaborate with Centre Leaders, Lead Outpatient Nurses, and Consultants to optimise outpatient capacity, reduce delays, and improve patient flow and experience.
- Represent the outpatient nursing workforce at relevant committee meetings, cancer board meetings, and local/regional forums.
- Lead the development and implementation of outpatient nursing processes and procedures, including CNS services, ensuring outpatient services meet KPI and regulatory standards.
- Support recruitment, workforce planning, and succession planning for all outpatient nursing and CNS roles.
- Foster a positive, supportive working environment prioritising staff wellbeing, development, and retention.
- Maintain clinical competency and credibility by working clinically within outpatient services.
What You’ll Have
Experience and skills:
- Substantial post-registration experience in oncology or cancer nursing, with leadership/management experience.
- Proven ability to lead, manage, and develop nursing teams, including Clinical Nurse Specialists.
- Strong understanding of cancer care pathways and outpatient service delivery.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills.
- Experience in service improvement, workforce planning, and change management.
Qualifications And Knowledge
- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
- Master’s degree or equivalent in cancer nursing, leadership, or healthcare management.
- Evidence of continuing professional development in oncology, management, and/or clinical education.
- Understanding of cancer services and CQC quality standards.
- Knowledge of governance frameworks, patient safety standards, and clinical supervision models.
