The Role
As the Senior SACT Nurse, you are responsible for delivering chemotherapy nursing services to patients within the unit and for deputising for the line manager where required. This is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact and develop your career.
What You’ll Do
- Provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through all stages of treatment.
- Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence‑based nursing care for patients undergoing chemotherapy: manage a patient caseload, liaise closely with medical consultants, order diagnostic tests within agreed parameters, and run nurse‑led clinics.
- Work autonomously whilst providing clinical leadership, ensuring all patients have an accurate plan of care that reflects assessment and incorporates recommendations, with clear documentation in the patient’s records.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in intravenous access, the management of central venous catheters, venepuncture, and chemotherapy delivery, including the management of anaphylaxis and extravasation.
What You’ll Have Experience and Skills
- Experience in intravenous drug administration.
- Experience in chemotherapy administration.
- Sufficient post‑registration nursing experience in oncology or a speciality to be confident and competent.
- Ability to work accurately and reliably under pressure.
- Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise.
- Experience and competence in blood transfusion and bone marrow biopsies.
Qualifications and Knowledge
- NMC Registered Nurse.
- UKONS SACT Passport or to be completed within three months of appointment.
- Fully trained and qualified in venepuncture and cannulations, with experience of working with different types of central venous access devices.
- Willingness to train towards a recognised chemotherapy qualification.
- UKONs trained and experienced in oncology telephone triage; recognition and management of neutropenic sepsis.
