As an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical design work across our client’s mobile and modular hydrogen infrastructure products, including the Mobile Hydrogen Refueller, Modular Gas Storage, Mobile Compressor, Panel and Dispenser. The role takes ownership of assigned mechanical design packages and produces engineering documentation to a consistently high standard, contributing to safe, rugged and certifiable product solutions for the construction equipment (CE) and agricultural (AG) sectors. Reporting to the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, you will work within the mechanical engineering team to deliver detailed design across the product lifecycle. The role contributes actively to design reviews, applies DFM principles and collaborates with EC&I, testing, manufacturing and supply chain colleagues to ensure integrated product delivery.
Responsibilities:
- Mechanical Design & Detailing: Produce detailed mechanical designs, 3D models and engineering drawings for assigned areas of the product range using CAD (NX, SolidWorks, CATIA or equivalent), to a professional, accurate and audit-ready standard. Develop and maintain BOMs, part specifications and technical documentation in line with design standards, change control processes and document management requirements. Contribute constructively to design reviews, providing clear and well-reasoned technical input and implementing review outcomes and actions thoroughly. Apply DFM and DFA principles to all design work, ensuring components and assemblies are producible, cost-effective and maintainable in CE and AG field environments.
- Product Development & Technical Delivery: Take ownership of assigned mechanical design packages through the full development lifecycle from concept to production release, working under the technical direction of the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer. Maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date design records, drawings, specifications and change documentation for all assigned work packages. Resolve mechanical engineering challenges relating to pressure containment, structural integrity, sealing, thermal management and mobility, escalating complex problems to the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer where appropriate. Work closely with the testing and development team to support prototype build activities, design iteration and validation testing for assigned product areas.
- Safety, Compliance & Engineering Assurance: Ensure all assigned designs comply with ATEX, PED, PSSR and other applicable UK/EU standards for high-pressure hydrogen equipment, maintaining full traceability from design intent to certification evidence. Contribute to design FMEAs, hazard identification reviews and technical risk assessments under the direction of the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, ensuring mechanical risks are identified and clearly documented. Maintain accurate and up-to-date engineering documentation in line with design governance, QMS and document control requirements at all times.
- Supplier & Manufacturing Engineering: Liaise with fabrication, machining and sub-assembly suppliers to communicate design intent clearly, resolve manufacturing queries and ensure delivered components meet quality and dimensional standards. Support supplier qualification activities by providing clear technical input on component specifications, tolerance requirements and acceptance criteria. Work with the manufacturing engineering team to resolve build issues arising from mechanical designs and contribute to production process improvements.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with EC&I, testing, manufacturing engineering and supply chain colleagues to ensure mechanical designs integrate effectively and deliverables are met on time and to quality. Support the commissioning and field deployment of products, providing mechanical engineering input during installation, first-article checks and site troubleshooting as required. Contribute ideas and technical analysis to product improvement, innovation and roadmap discussions within the engineering team.
- Knowledge Sharing: Actively maintain and develop personal technical skills in mechanical design, high-pressure systems and product domain, keeping up to date with relevant standards and industry developments. Contribute to the improvement of mechanical design standards, drawing templates and engineering processes, supporting the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer in raising team-wide quality.
