About the company

The organisation is an early-stage biotechnology company developing ways to understand how microbial communities respond to drugs and other chemicals. It combines high-throughput experiments on human-derived microbial communities with causal machine learning to build predictive models of these interactions.

Its work brings experimental science and computational modelling together: results from the models help guide further experiments, while experimental data improves the models. The broader aim is to help organisations working in areas such as pharmaceuticals and consumer products better understand how compounds affect microbial communities.

The team’s approach emphasises rigorous analysis, transparent assumptions and close collaboration between experimental and computational scientists. It is building a research environment where robust, reusable methods and clear communication help turn complex microbiome data into useful biological understanding.

What the job entails

As Computational Biologist, you will turn microbiome data into biological insight and reliable methods for scientific and modelling work. You will lead computational studies and make the scientific judgements needed to assess experimental data, determine what it can support and identify when further investigation is needed.

You will analyse 16S and metagenomic data, assess data quality and investigate contamination, assay drift, protocol changes and batch effects.

You will develop repeatable workflows as new data types are introduced, and work with experimental scientists to refine hypotheses, controls and follow-up studies.

In partnership with computational and machine-learning colleagues, you will help define biologically meaningful features and benchmarks, and investigate model failures. You will also contribute to research initiatives, propose new in-silico questions, write reusable code and explain findings to colleagues across disciplines. The role is based in London on a hybrid basis.

Key requirements / What we look for

  • Relevant doctorate, or a master’s degree plus at least three years’ industry experience; evidence of independent research.
  • Hands-on 16S or metagenomic analysis and strong understanding of microbial biology, reference databases and functional annotation limitations.
  • Sound statistical reasoning, including experimental design, confounding, repeated measures, multiple testing and compositional data.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R; reproducible work using Git and Linux.
  • Experience collaborating with experimental scientists; comparative genomics, pangenomes, pathway or enzyme annotation, or sequence-based methods.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary of up to £75,000 and meaningful stock options.
  • Employer-paid private medical and dental cover; pension with a 3% employer contribution, life insurance, income protection and critical illness cover.
  • 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, birthday leave and a paid winter break.
  • Hybrid working, home-office stipend, company computer and conference support.
