This position offers a career opportunity in the challenging and fast-paced Specialty of Tire Engineering within the Tire-Wheel Systems (TWS) Organization at General Motors (GM). As Lead Tire Test and Analysis Engineer, you will have a leadership role developing New Tire Test Methods and New Tire Analysis Methods to advance technology, improve predicted performance, reduce lead times, and lower development costs. You will work closely with TWS Lab Technicians, Lab Engineers, Technical Specialists, and Tire Suppliers.
What You Will Do (Responsibilities)
- Lead development of New Test and Analysis Methods for Rolling Resistance, Traction, Force & Moment, and Impact Resistance.
- Lead development of reduced lead time and lower cost Tire Test Methods for Treadwear and Endurance.
- Lead implementation of New Test and Analysis Methods with GM’s Global Tire Supply Base in accordance with requirements.
- Lead development and implementation of Tire Profile Packaging requirements.
- Conduct Special Tests and Analysis for Field, Regulatory, and Motorsports investigations.
- Perform Onsite Tire Supplier Lab Test Equipment Technical Assessments.
- Determine Vehicle Load Inputs into Tires for Virtual analysis.
- Serve as the GM Representative for ASTM and SAE Tire Technical Committees.
- Lead complex technical problem-solving investigations and recommend data-driven direction.
- Analyze and interpret test results to assess production readiness.
- Update and maintain test procedures in collaboration with Tire Test Lab.
- Demonstrate creativity, innovation, and a willingness to take on challenging assignments.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Candidate must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee).
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or other relevant degree.
- Minimum 5 years of Tire Engineering experience or other relevant experience.
- Proficient in using VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), MATLAB, and C# (C Sharp) software.
- High level of interpersonal skills to work collaboratively and effectively with others both internally at GM and externally with Suppliers to meet mutual objectives.
- High level of oral and written communication skills.
- Applied knowledge in engineering mechanics, physics, metallurgy, and manufacturing methods related to the tire/wheel commodity.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Master of Science (MS) in Engineering.
- Experience working at a Tire Supplier or Tire Test Lab.
- DFSS Black Belt Certification.
The position is subject to export control restrictions and requires the successful candidate to be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee).
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week.
