Overview
The Clay Specialist role will have the responsibility for delivering physical properties at Scale and Full-size that support the continuous design development of a vehicle program from initial sketch through to final presentation, always striving for the highest levels of model quality. Duties of the role will include all aspects of the clay sculpting process; armature build, clay loading, interpreting design direction from Designers/Design Director, from sketch to detailed surface preparation. Machine programming including proficient use of on plate studio milling equipment and excellent knowledge of the workflow between clay modelling & digitizing/scanning. An in-depth understanding of both digital and physical workstreams and the setup and implementation of digital-physical-digital workflow is imperative to the role. An understanding of the 3D printing process is desirable.
Onsite – This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the design studio on a full-time basis.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all modelling hall activities and work closely with the Physical Modelling Co-Ordination Specialist and Head of 3D Creation and Visualisation to deliver exceptional Clay models for internal reviews up to and including Global Design VP level.
- Creative clay sculpting activities with a strong appreciation and understanding of Design and the Design process.
- Strong communication skills and close working with both the GM Advanced Design Europe and wider GM studios will be key to the role.
- Attention to detail and a high level of skill and accuracy are required to deliver exceptional levels of model quality at pace in a deadline driven environment.
- Minimum experience (10+ years) clay modelling within the automotive industry.
- Candidate must be able to translate two dimensional drawings and sketches of cutting-edge designs into three-dimensional objects.
- The ability to use expert craftmanship to create sculpted surfaces and intricate objects which tell a visual story of their function.
- Machine programming including proficient use of on plate studio milling equipment and excellent knowledge of the workflow between clay modelling & digitizing/scanning.
- The role will not have direct reports, however the ability to effectively lead a team as a role model is required.
- A positive attitude and flexibility to working with and helping the wider studio team.
- A genuine interest in new studio technology and willingness to learn new ways of working.
- An enthusiastic and positive individual who will add to our open collaborative team and participate in group ideation forums.
- To be able to work directly with the Alias modelling and studio engineering teams to develop and increase model feasibility.
- Work with and encourage/mentor junior team members, graduates and interns.
- Fluent in English (speaking and writing) communicative and ability to work within a multi-cultural team.
- Full design studio and workshop knowledge including the safe operation of workshop machinery and continually adhere to GM safe working practices.
- Hard modelling background and understanding is a plus.
