This is an ideal role for someone who has a proactive and positive mindset and a keen desire to grow professionally. Joining an established team based at our Merthyr facility, you will be responsible for delivering system safety activities across one or more vehicle subsystems or projects. The role operates largely independently, applying established safety engineering principles to ensure compliance with regulatory, customer and company requirements across the ground vehicle lifecycle.

The role contributes to the development of safe military vehicle solutions by producing high‑quality safety artefacts, supporting certification and acceptance activities, and influencing design decisions to achieve ALARP risk positions. If you were already working in this position, this is what you would have been working on this week:

  • Deliver system safety engineering activities in accordance with project safety plans, company processes, and applicable standards (e.g. DEF STANs, MIL STDs, ISO 26262 where applicable).
  • Produce, maintain, and review system safety artefacts including:
    • Safety cases and safety arguments
    • System, subsystem, and functional safety assessments
    • Risk assessments and ALARP justification
  • Support safety assurance activities across all lifecycle phases, including concept, design, integration, trials, production, and in‑service support.
  • Interface with systems, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering disciplines to ensure safety requirements are embedded into design solutions.
  • Review supplier safety documentation and contribute to safety acceptance decisions.
  • Support engagement with customers, assessors, trials teams, and suppliers on safety matters.
  • Support incident investigation, issue resolution, and definition of corrective actions.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Broad experience in system safety engineering within defence or equivalent high‑integrity engineering environments.
  • Experience working to, or applying principles from:
    • DEF STAN 00‑056 – Safety Management Requirements for Defence Systems
    • DEF STAN 00‑055 – Hazard Identification and Management
    • IEC 61508 – Functional Safety (principles applicable beyond electrical systems)
    • ISO 26262 – Road Vehicle Functional Safety (applied pragmatically where relevant)
    • AAP‑20 / NATO STANAG safety expectations (where applicable)
  • IEng status desirable; working towards IEng essential.
  • Familiarity with military ground vehicle systems is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of system safety principles and hazard management techniques.
  • Ability to apply professional judgement to complex safety problems within defined scopes.
  • Capable of producing high‑quality, auditable safety documentation.
  • Applies creativity to balance safety, operational, and programme constraints.
  • System safety analysis and hazard management.
  • Safety case development and assurance.
  • Risk assessment and ALARP justification.
  • Stakeholder engagement and technical communication.
  • Independent task planning and delivery.
